SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their matches against UW-La Crosse and Luther on Tuesday sporting a 5-2 overall record.
• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s is coming off a 2-1 showing at the UW-Superior Subway Stinger Classic, falling to the host Yellowjackets 3-0 last Friday, before rebounding with wins over Northland (3-2) and Bethany Lutheran (3-1).
• SWEEPING UP: Four of Saint Mary’s seven matches this season have been decided by 3-0 sweeps — the lone exceptions, the Cardinals’ 3-2 wins over UMN Morris and Northland, and a 3-1 SMU win over Bethany Lutheran.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) was named MIAC Specialty Player of the Week on Sept. 6, after racking up racking up 136 assists, two assist-dig double-doubles and eight service aces in SMU’s four Sugar Loaf Classic matches.
• ON THE ATTACK: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) picked up a team-high 49 kills in SMU’s three matches at last weekend’s UW-Superior Subway Stinger Classic, giving the senior a team-high 118 kills through seven matches. … Kali Olson (New York Mills, Minn.) is sitting second on the team with 67 kills, followed by Breanna Bruchert () with 46. … As a team, Saint Mary’s has amassed 312 kills and is hitting .181. … McNally ended the 2022 season leading the team with 346 kills, leaving her second in the MIAC.
• DOUBLE DIGITS: McNally has recorded at least 10 kills in all seven of the Cardinals’ matches this season, including a season-high 24 against UMN Morris on Sept. 2.
• HITTING 20 x 2: Saint Mary’s boasted two players with 20+ kills in its 3-2 win over UMN Morris on Sept. 2 — McNally led the charge with 24 and Olson chipped in 21.
• CAREER BESTS: The Cardinals had a pair of players post career-highs of 10 or more kills at the season-opening Sugar Loaf Classic on Sept. 1-2. Olson recorded a career-best 21 kills against UMN Morris on Sept. 2, while Baker recorded 10 vs. Lawrence the previous evening.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: VanErp amassed 110 assists in three matches last weekend, including a new single-match career high of 50 against Northland last Saturday. … VanErp has delivered at least 24 helpers in all seven matches this season, including 30 or more helpers four times. … VanErp’s 50 assists were the most since Lillian Braun recorded a 53-assist performance against Coe on Sept. 27, 2019.
• DOUBLING UP: McNally, who led the team with 14 double-doubles in 2022, has recorded four kill-dig double-doubles this season, while VanErp has notched the first three set-dig double-doubles of her collegiate career.
• DIGGING IT: Lindsey Rossow (Rochester, Minn.) was the team’s digs leader at the UW-Superior Subway Stinger Classic last weekend, racking up 53 digs in three matches. … Rossow leads the Cardinals in digs with 112 digs, followed by McNally (80), VanErp (60), and Alison Wu (Woodbury, Minn. / 59). … SMU has had three players notch career-highs in digs this season — Rossow posted a career-high 30 digs against UMN Morris on Sept. 2, Wu posted a career-best 12 digs against Marian on Sept. 1, and VanErp’s 12 digs against Bethany Lutheran last Saturday were also a career-high.
• SERVING UP ACES: Along with her team-leading 246 assists, VanErp also leads the team with 11 service aces, four more than Olson, and five up on Devann Clemens (Chatfield, Minn.). … As a team, Saint Mary’s owns 41 aces through four matches. … Saint Mary’s recorded a season-high eight aces against Marian on Sept. 1.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: SMU boasts 312 kills (12.0 kps), 282 assists, 41 aces, 421 digs, and 42 blocks in seven matches. … The Cardinals recorded a single-match season-high 56 kills against UMN Morris on Sept. 2, while also setting season-highs in assists (51), and digs (88) against the Cougars. … SMU is 4-3 in the first set this season, while going 3-0 in the fourth. … Saint Mary’s has now played two matches extended to a fifth set, winning both.
UW-LA CROSSE SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Eagles head into their nonconference matches against Saint Mary’s and Luther on Tuesday sitting at 5-3 overall.
• LAST ACTION: UW-La Crosse finished 1-3 at the Augsburg Invitational last weekend in Minneapolis, Minn., dropping 3-2 decisions to No. 18 Gustavus, Lakeland, and St. Catherine, before sweeping past Augsburg 3-0.
• STREAKING: It’s been an early-season rollercoaster ride for the Eagles, who opened the year with four consecutive wins at the Saint Mary’s Sugar Loaf Classic on Sept. 1-2, before dropping three in a row to kick off last weekend’s Augsburg Invitational.
• FACING THE MIAC: Tuesday’s match against Saint Mary’s is the sixth of seven matches against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Eagles have already faced Carleton (W, 3-1), St. Scholastica (W, 3-0), Gustavus (L, 3-2), St. Catherine (L, 3-2), and Augsburg (W, 3-0), and still have Macalester on their slate.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Tuesday’s matches against Saint Mary’s and Luther are the ninth and 10th consecutive road matches to kick off the season. UW-L will play its next eight contests on their home court, beginning this weekend with the UW-L Invitational
• ON THE ATTACK: Brianne Korducki has amassed a team-leading 116 kills through eight matches (3.74 kps), followed by Gabrialla Johnson (76), Reese Yocum (64), Justine Bastyr (38), and Anna Rossner (38). … Korducki has recorded 10+ kills in all eight matches this season, including a season-0high 23 kills in UW-L’s 3-2 loss to St. Catherine last Saturday.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Jackie Oetterer and Grace Nommensen have shared the setting duties for the Eagles this season, with Oetterer dishing out 156 assists, followed closely by Nommensen with 135. The du have accounted for 291 of the team’s 362 helpers through eight games. … Oetterer owns eight 10+ assist games, including a 23-assist effort against Carleton on Sept. 1 and a season-bet 27-assst showing against Gustavus last Friday. … Nommensen also boasts a pair of 20+ assist performances this season — dishing out 20 helpers against St. Scholastica on Sept. 2 and a season-best 26 vs. St. Catherine last Saturday.
• DIGGING IT: The Eagles, who own 491 digs through eight matches, boast six players with 50 or more digs — led by Korducki with 108. Johnson (72), Ella Luoma (63), Nommensen (62), Taylor Larson (60), and Oetterer (55) have also eclipsed the 50-dig mark.
• DOUBLING UP: Korducki enters Tuesday’s matches leading the team with six kill-dig double-doubles, while Oetterer and Nommensen both own a pair of assist-dig double-doubles.
• SERVING UP ACES: Luoma and Korducki led the team in service aces with 15 and 12, respectively, with Nommensen sitting third on the team with nine. … As a unit, UW-L has amassed 63 aces in eight matches.
• BY THE NUMBERS: As a team, UW-La Crosse has recorded 384 kills, 362 assists, 64 aces, 491 digs, and 89 blocks. … The Eagles recorded a single-match season-high 62 kills and added 59 assists against St. Catherine last Saturday, while recording a season-high 102 digs against Gustavus the previous evening. … Four of UW-L’s five wins this season have come by sweep, with the other a 3-1 win. On the flip side, all three of the Eagles’ losses have gone the maximum five sets.
LUTHER SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Norse enter Tuesday’s matches against UW-La Crosse and Saint Mary’s sitting at 2-5 through their first seven contests of the season.
• LAST ACTION: Luther kicked off the Macalester Invitational on the right foot, beating Grinnell 3-2 last Friday, but dropped a 3-2 decision to Carleton and suffered a 3-0 setback to host Macalester the following day
• ROAD WARRIORS: The Norse are in the midst of playing their first 14 matches of the 2023 season on the road. After Tuesday’s contests at Saint Mary’s, Luther will head to the UW-La Crosse Invitational this weekend, and then play St. Scholastica and Augsburg in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 23, before finally returning home to face Coe on Sept. 27.

• GIVING AN ASSIST: Emma Kowalczyk has accounted for 194 of the team’s 229 assists this season, and has posted at least 15 helpers in all seven contests. … Kowalczyk has eclipsed 20 assists in a match six times — including a 39-assist effort against Carleton last Saturday, and a season-high 49-assist match against Grinnell the previous evening.
• DIGGING IT: Kyah Olson-Sola owns a team-leading 96 digs, with Teagan Hansen (67), Karoline Tiu (58), Gabbie Schei (57), and Stortz (53) also surpassing the 50-dig mark through seven matches. … Olson-Sola owns a pair of 20+ dig performances this year, recording 20 against Carleton last Saturday, and adding a season-high 21 vs. Blackburn on Sept. 2.
• SERVING UP ACES: Luther has served up 48 aces in seven matches, with Schei (14), Olson-Sola (11), Stortz (10), and Hansen (9) accounting for 44 of them.
• BY THE NUMBERS: As a team, Luther has posted 270 kills (10.38 kps), while adding 229 assists, 48 aces, 537 digs, and 49 blocks. … Luther put up season-highs in kills (67), assists (56), and digs (87) in its 3-2 win over Grinnell last Friday. … Four of Luther’s first seven matches have been decided by a 3-0 sweep — the Norse are 1-3 in those four contests.
