SUPERIOR, Wis. — It wasn't quite the start the Saint Mary's University volleyball team was hoping for.
The Cardinals, coming off a 3-1 showing at the season-opening Sugar Loaf Classic, couldn't seem to find their offensive rhythm against host UW-Superior Friday evening, as the Yellowjackets dealt SMU a 3-0 setback during Day 1 of the Subway Stinger Classic.
UW-Superior dealt the Cardinals a 25-19 setback in Set 1 of their nonconference match, before outlasting the Cardinals 26-24 in the second stet. The Yellowjackets held off a Saint Mary's comeback in the third set, completed the sweep with a 25-20, match-clinching victory.
Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) led the offensive charge for the Cardinals, finishing with 13 kills and hitting .222, while
Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) tallied 24 assists, and
Lindsey Rossow (Rochester, Minn.) and Allision Wu (Woodbury, Minn.) chipped in 16 and 11 digs, respectively.
The Cardinals (3-2 overall) are back in action on Saturday, when they square off against Northland (10 a.m.) and Bethany Lutheran (noon) during the second day of the two-day event in Superior, Wis.
