SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference-opening game against St. Catherine on Wednesday sporting a 3-1-0 record through four games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Samantha Munson (Plain City, Utah) scored in the game’s third minute, and the SMU defense made that goal stand up, as the Cardinals shut out Lawrence 1-0 in a nonconference game last Saturday in Appleton, Wis.
• FAST STARTS: The Cardinals have scored a goal before the eight-minute mark in all four of their games this season. Genesis Capacio (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored at 7:09 against UMN Morris on Sept. 1, Laura Ashe (Beaverton, Ore.) needed just 2:55 to put SMU out front against Wartburg on Sept. 3, Ella Lahart (Sherwood, Ore.) found the back of the net 7:52 into the first half against Beloit last Tuesday, and Munson scored at 2:19 of the first half vs. Lawrence four days later.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals went 6-1-2 in their eight home games last season and are 11-3-4 in their last 18 home games.
• THROWING UP ZEROS: Seventeen of Saint Mary’s last 23 games have been decided by shutout — including 12 of SMU’s last 14 wins. … All three of SMU’s victories this season have been by shutout — 6-0 over UMN Morris, and 1-0 over both Beloit and Lawrence.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s nine goals this season have come from eight different players, led by Munson, who has netted a team-best two goals. Capacio, Lahart, Ashe, Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.), Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.), Hannah Bradley (Portland, Ore.), and Dakota Leonard (Lincolnshire, Ill.) own SMU’s other seven goals.
• CAREER FIRSTS: Bradley netted her first collegiate goal in SMU’s 6-0 win over UMN Morris on Sept. 1, while Ashe’s first-half tally against Wartburg two days later was her first as a Cardinal. Saint Mary’s had five players record their first collegiate goals a year ago.
• CAREER FIRST II: Munson collected her first collegiate multiple-point game, scoring once and assisting on two others for a four-point effort in SMU’s 6-0 win over UMN Morris last Friday.
• LENDING A HAND: Munson owns the team lead in assists with three, one more than Peyton Maier (Elk River, Minn.), while Lahart, Ashe, McKinney, Leonard, and Anna Warneke (Maple Grove, Minn.) have all collected one helper..
• POINT PRODUCER: Samantha Munson sits atop the team’s points race with five, followed by Ashe and Leonard with three, and McKinney, Bradley, Skoruppa, Lahart, and Capacio with two each…. Falkman closed out 2022 with a team-best 13 points (5 G, 3 A).
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) did not have to face a shot in 56 minutes of work against UMN Morris on Sept. 1, while Megan Nadal (Chino, Calif.) stopped the lone shot she faced in 34 minutes of relief. … Peckosh heads into SMU’s matchup against St. Catherine with a 0.77 goals-against-average and an .818 save percentage in three starts. … Peckosh has made nine saves in three games. …
• GOALKEEPING FIRSTS: McKenzie Munson (Plain City, Utah) recorded her first collegiate win and first career shutout — in her first collegiate start, a 1-0 win over Beloit on Sept. 5. … Peckosh stopped a career-high eight shots in racking up career shutout No. 1 against UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 16, 2022. … Peckosh made her first collegiate start against UW-Stout on Oct. 5, 2022, stopping both Blue Devil shots she faced in 45:00 of play, while making her first appearance in a Cardinal uniform on Sept. 17, 2022, making three saves in 22 minutes of relief in SMU’s 3-0 loss to Saint Benedict. … Nadal made her first collegiate start on Sept. 21, 2022 against Luther, stopping seven first-half shots.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: With their three second-half goals against UMN Morris on Sept. 1, Saint Mary’s has now netted 18 of its last 22 goals in the second half. … Saint Mary’s has allowed just two goals in four games — both coming in the second half. … SMU’s six goals against the Cougars on Sept. 1 are the most since SMU poured in 11 goals against Martin Luther on Sept. 6, 2021. … Saint Mary’s holds a 79-31 advantage in shots, including a 40-13 edge in shots on goal through four games.
ST. CATHERINE WILDCATS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Wildcats head into their conference-opening showdown against Saint Mary’s sitting at 3-1-0 overall.
• LAST TIME OUT: St. Catherine picked up its third shutout win of the season last Saturday, cruising to a 5-0 nonconference win over UMN Morris in Morris, Minn.
• YEAR TO REMEMBER: The Wildcats closed out the 2022 season with a 13-5-4 overall record, including a 7-2-2 showing in conference play. SCU knocked off No. 2 seed Saint Benedict in PKs and dropped top-seeded Carleton 1-0 to win the MIAC Playoff title. The Wildcats’ post-season run came to a halt with a 2-1, double-overtime setback against Washington (Mo.) University in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
• ROAD TRIP: Wednesday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s is the second of back-to-back road games for the Wildcats, who will return home for games against St. Olaf and UW-River Falls this weekend. SCU is 1-1-0 on its home field this year, while going 2-0-0 on the road.
• THROWING UP ZEROS: All four of St. Catherine’s games this season have been decided by shutout. SCU has defeated UW-Stevens Point (2-0), UW-Eau Claire (1-0), and UMN Morris (5-0), while dropping a 1-0 decision to Pomona-Pitzer in its lone loss.
• SHE SHOOTS AND SCORES: Ari Green has scored a team-leading four goals to account for more than half of the Wildcats’ seven goals scored this season. Kallan Tuorminen, Amanda Elton, and Isa Solorzano own SCU’s other three tallies. … Green has scored two goals in a game twice this season — netting a pair against UW-Stevens Point on Sept. 1, and adding two of SCU’s five goals against UMN Morris last Saturday.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Tuominen has collected a team-best two assists, with Green, Elton, Briana Henaman, Kendra Lingman, Kylee Newes, and Maddi Springer have also collected helpers this season.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Green sits atop the Wildcats’ points lead with nine (4 G, 1 A), followed by Tuominen with four (1 G, 2 A), Elton with three (1 G, 1 A), and Solorzano with two (2 A).
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Kate Praetz has played every minute in goal through SCU’s first four games,, compiling a 0.25 goals-against-average and a .950 save percentage. … Praetz, who started 20 of the Wildcats’ 22 games a year ago, closing out the year with a 0.91 GAA and .830 save %, has stopped 19 of the 20 shots she’s faced this season and owns three shutouts. … Praetz stopped a season-high 12 shots in SCU’s 1-0 loss to Pomona-Pitzer last Friday.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Wildcats have outshot their first four opponents 62-43 and hold a 33-20 edge in shots on goal. … St. Catherine has scored seven of its eight goals this season in the second half, while Pomona-Pitzer netted the only goal allowed by the Wildcats this season after the intermission. … St. Catherine recorded season-highs in goals (5), assists (7), points (17), shots (34), and shots on goal (16) in last Saturday’s 5-0 win over UMN Morris.
