SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their weekend matches against Gustavus, Concordia, and Central-Iowa sitting at 7-7 overall, with SMU’s contests against Gustavus Friday and Concordia Saturday marking the first two MIAC matches.
• LAST ACTION: Brenna Bruchert (Eau Claire, Wis.) recorded 18 kills to lead four players in double figures in kills, as the Cardinals evened their record at 7-7 with a 3-2 victory over Buena Vista Tuesday evening in Storm Lake, Iowa.
• WEARLY BIRDS: The Cardinals’ three matches this weekend mark the eighth, ninth, and 10th contests in an 11-day span.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: With their 3-2 win over Buena Vista, Saint Mary’s has now played five matches that have been extended to a fifth set. The Cardinals are 3-2 in those five contests — beating UMN Morris, Northland, and Buena Vista, while falling to UW-La Crosse and Monmouth.
• SWEEPING UP: Seven of Saint Mary’s 14 matches this season have been decided by 3-0 sweeps. The Cardinals are 3-4 in those seven contests — beating Marian, Lawrence, and Luther, while falling to Elmhurst, UW-Superior, Coe, and the University of Dubuque.
• ON THE ATTACK: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) heads into the weekend boasting a team-high 212 kills through 14 matches, and is one of three Cardinals who have eclipsed the 100-kill plateau. Kali Olson (New York Mills, Minn.) is sitting second on the team with 123 kills, followed by Jazzy Davis (La Crosse, Wis.) with 106. … McNally ended the 2022 season leading the team with 346 kills, leaving her second in the MIAC. … As a team, Saint Mary’s has amassed 624 kills and is hitting .178.
• DOUBLE DIGITS: McNally has recorded at least 10 kills in 13 of the Cardinals’ 14 matches this season, including three matches of 20 or more kills. … McNally tallied a season-high 24 kills against UMN Morris on Sept. 2.
• HITTING 10 x 4: The Cardinals had a season-high four players record 10 or more kills in last Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Buena Vista. Bruchert led the way with 18, followed by McNally with 14, Olson with 12, and Davis with 10.
• HITTING 20 x 2: Saint Mary’s boasted two players with 20+ kills in its 3-2 win over UMN Morris on Sept. 2 — McNally led the charge with 24 and Olson chipped in 21.
• CAREER BESTS: The Cardinals have had four players post career-highs of 10 or more kills this season. Olson recorded a career-best 21 kills against UMN Morris on Sept. 2, while Bruchert delivered a career-high 18 kills at Buena Vista last Tuesday; Davis tallied a career-high 15 vs. Loras on Sept. 15, and Baker recorded 10 vs. Lawrence on Sept. 1.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) has accounted for 495 of the Cardinals’ 569 assists this season, including a single-match career high of 53 against Monmouth on Sept. 16. … VanErp has delivered at least 20 helpers in all 14 matches this season, including 30 or more helpers nine times. … VanErp’s 53 assists against Loras on Sept. 16 marked the second time the junior has delivered 50 of more assists, and were the most since Lillian Braun recorded a 53-assist performance against Coe on Sept. 27, 2019.
• DOUBLING UP: McNally, who led the team with 14 double-doubles in 2022, has recorded seven kill-dig double-doubles this season, while VanErp has notched the first five set-dig double-doubles of her collegiate career.
• DIGGING IT: Lindsey Rossow (Rochester, Minn.) leads the Cardinals in digs with 213 digs, followed by McNally (153), VanErp (106), Devann Clemens (Chatfield, Minn. /106), and Alison Wu (Woodbury, Minn. / 105). … Rossow posted a career-high 30 digs against UMN Morris on Sept. 2, Wu posted a career-best 12 digs against Marian on Sept. 1, and VanErp’s 12 digs against Bethany Lutheran last Saturday were also a career-high.
• SERVING UP ACES: Along with her team-leading 495 assists, VanErp also leads the team with 24 service aces. Rossow (17), Clemens (15), Olson (15), Wu (13), and McNally (10) have also reached double figures in aces this season. … As a team, Saint Mary’s owns 105 aces through 14 matches. … Saint Mary’s recorded a season-high eight aces against Marian on Sept. 1.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) was named MIAC Specialty Player of the Week on Sept. 6, after racking up racking up 136 assists, two assist-dig double-doubles and eight service aces in SMU’s four Sugar Loaf Classic matches.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: SMU boasts 624 kills (11.56 kps), 569 assists, 104 aces, 837 digs, and 90 blocks in 13 matches. … The Cardinals have recorded 60 or more kills in a match twice — posting 65 against Monmouth on Sept. 16 and a season-high 66 at Buena Vista last Tuesday — while also tallying a season-high 66 assists against both of those teams. … SMU is 7-7 in the first set this season, while going 4-3 in the fourth. SMU is 6-8 in both the second and third sets.
GUSTAVUS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Gusties head into their conference-opening match against Saint Mary’s sitting at 10-3 overall
• LAST ACTION: Gustavus suffered just its third loss in its first 13 contests on Wednesday in St. Peter, Minn., as the Gusties dropped a five-set heartbreaker to No. 6 Northwestern (Minn.), falling 17-15 in the decisive fifth set.
• STREAK SNAPPERS: For the third time this season, Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to No. 6 Northwestern snapped a Gustavus winning streak — this one a two-match run. GAC’s first loss, a 3-1 decision to UC-Santa Cruz ended GAC’s season-opening three-match winning streak, while the Gusties’ 3-0 loss to No. 18 Cornell put an end to their season-high five-match win streak.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Friday’s match against Saint Mary’s is just the third home contest of the season for the Gusties, who are 1-1 on their home court, while going 9-2 away from Gus Young Court — including a perfect 8-0 in neutral-site contests.
• QUITE A RUN: The Gusties are coming off a perfect 11-0 run through the MIAC regular-season schedule, as well as capturing the conference tournament title with a 3-2 victory over St. Olaf. GAC topped UW-Eau Claire 3-1 in the NCAA Regional quarterfinals, before falling to UW-Whitewater 3-2 in the semis.
• ON THE ATTACK: Gustavus heads into its weekend matches against Saint Mary’s, Carleton, and Grinnell boasting three players who have already eclipsed the 100-kill mark through 13 matches. Marlee Turn leads the way for the Gusties with 170, followed by Lauren Klaith with 134 and Madi Kes with 118. … Turn owns 11 matches with 10+ kills, including a season-high 20-kill effort against Cal Lutheran on Sept. 1, while Klaith has hit double figures in kills 10 times and Kes owns five matches with 10 or more kills. … Turn has put together a team-best eight kill-dig double-doubles.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Kasie Tweet has collected 473 of the Gusties’ 555 assists this season, including 28 or more helpers in all 13 contests. … Tweet has dished out 30 or more assists in 11 of GAC’s 13 contests and owns a season-high 52-assist effort against Cal Lutheran on Sept. 1. … Tweet boasts eight assist-dig double-doubles this season.
• DIGGING IT: Maren Sundberg leads four Gusties who have recorded 100 or more digs this season, tallying a team-best 219 digs in 13 matches. Turn (159), Tweet (145), and Payton Auseth (103) have also eclipsed the 100-dig mark, while Mayssa Tweet is just five digs short of the 100-dig mark. … Sundberg has recorded 10+ digs in all 13 contests, including a season-high 26 digs against UW-Eau Claire on Sept. 9.
• SERVING UP ACES: Gustavus has posted 111 service aces in 13 matches, with six Gusties serving up at least 10. Sydney Olson leads the ace brigade with 25, followed by Kasie Tweet with 20. Sundberg (17), Mayssa Tweet (16), Turn (15), and Auseth (13) have also reached double figures in aces.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: As a team, Gustavus has racked up 612 kills, 559 assists, 109 aces, 876 digs, and 158 blocks in 13 matches. … GAC has dropped one three-set, one four-set, and one five-set match this season. The Gusties are 4-1 in three- and four-setters, and 2-1 in five-set contests. … The Gusties delivered a single-match season-high 64 kills and 56 assists against Cal Lutheran on Sept. 1, while posting a season-best 90 digs against UW-La Crosse on Sept. 8.
CONCORDIA SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cobbers headed into their weekend conference matches at Macalester and Saint Mary’s sitting at 8-4 overall.
• LAST ACTION: Concordia put together a 3-1 record at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational last weekend in Eau Claire, Wis., rattling off wins over Beloit (3-0), Buena Vista (3-1), and Concordia-WI (3-2), before falling to St. Norbert (3-1).
• STREAK-SNAPPER: The Cobbers’ 3-1 loss to St. Norbert last Saturday snapped their season-high four-match winning streak. Concordia heads into the weekend owning winning streaks of three and four matches. CC has yet to lose back-to-back contests this season.
• ROAD WARRIORS: With their matches at Macalester on Friday and vs. Saint Mary’s and Central-Iowa in Winona, Minn., on Saturday, the Cobbers will have played 14 of their first 15 contests on the road. CC boasts an 8-3 record on the road — including an 8-1 mark in neutral-site matches, while dropping a 3-1 decision to Valley City State in its lone home contest on Sept. 5.
• ON THE ATTACK: The Cobbers boast a pair of players who have already eclipsed the 100-kill mark through the season’s first 12 matches. Brook Carney leads the CC offensive attack with 146 kills, while Mallory Leitner owns 112 kills. Maria Watt is sitting third on the team with 89 kills, five more than Hannah Keil. … Carney has posted 10 or more kills in nine of CC’s 12 matches. … Leitner, meanwhile, has reached double figures in kills five times — including a season-high 21 kills vs. St. Norbert last Saturday.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Kaia Lill has accounted for 438 of the team’s 528 assists through 12 matches and has recorded at least 20 assists in all 12 contests. … Lill owns seven 40+ assist performances, and has dished out a season-high 46 helpers three times — including in back-to-back matches against Concordia (Wis.) and St. Norbert last Saturday. … Lill owns four assist-dig double-doubles
• DIGGING IT: The Cobbers have four players with 100+ digs, led by Chloe Markovic’s 182. Keil (134), Hanna Mooney (121), and Karlie Goschen (113) have also reached the century mark in digs this season. … Markovic has reached double digits in digs 10 times, including three 20+ dig performances.
• SERVING UP ACES: Lill has served up a team-leading 20 aces and is one of four Cobbers with at least 10 aces this season, being joined by Markovic (12), Goschen (10), and Mooney I10).
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: As a team, Concordia heads into the weekend with 573 kills (12.46 kps), 528 assists, 88 aces, 854 digs, and 85 blocks. … Six of Concordia’s first 12 matches have been decided in four sets. CC is 3-3 in those six contests. The Cobbers are 3-1 in three-set matches, and have won both of their five-setters — beating Schreiner 3-2 on Sept. 1 and Concordia (Wis.) 3-2 last Saturday. … The Cobbers racked up a season-high 61 kills in beating Concordia (Wis.) last Saturday. … CC dished out a season-best 57 assists and 94 digs vs. Northland on Sept. 9.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Dutch head into their nonconference matches against Concordia and Saint Mary’s sitting at 10-2 overall.
• LAST ACTION: Central saw its season-high eight-match winning streak come to an end last Tuesday, as the Dutch dropped a 3-1 decision to Grinnell in Pella, Iowa.
• STREAK-SNAPPERS: Prior to last Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to Grinnell, the Dutch had rattled off wins in 10 of their first 11 contests — including an eight-match winning streak. Central’s other loss this season was a 3-0 setback to Dominican on Sept. 2.
• ROAD SUCCESS: Last Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to Grinnell was Central’s second home loss of the season. The Dutch are just 3-2 on their home court, while sporting a perfect 7-0 mark away from P.H.Kuyper Gym this season.
• SWEEPING UP: Eight of Central’s 12 matches have been decided in three sets — including each of the Dutch’s first eight contests. Gracie Pierson leads the Dutch attack with 99 kills, followed by Gracie Daniels with 87. Leslie Snow (80), Elyse Johnson (77) and Emma Wagler (74) have also reached 70+ kills this season. … Daniels has reached double figures in kills a team-leading six times, one more than Snow. … Pierson and Daniels have each recorded a single-match season-high 14 kills this season. … Snow has recorded a team-leading three kill-dig double-doubles.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Avery Rexroat has accounted for 341 of the team’s 507 assists through 12 matches, with Makayla Ribble sitting a distant second with 84 helpers. … Rexroat has dished out 20 or more assists in all 12 matches and owns four 30+ assist performances…. Rexroat, who delivered a single-match season-high 42 assists against Grinnell last Tuesday, owns two assist-dig double-doubles.
• DIGGING IT: Central boasts three players who have eclipsed the 100-dig mark this season, led by Colleen Kenney, who is just four digs shy of 200.
