WINONA, Minn. — It's only fitting that on Senior Day, seniors would take center stage in the Saint Mary's men's soccer team's nonconference game against Nebraska Wesleyan Sunday afternoon.
Â
Jack Hurley (Homewood, Ill.) scored the game-tying goal with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, and
Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) stopped a career-high 13 shots, as the Cardinals rallied to a 1-1 deadlock against the visiting Prairie Wolves at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
The Prairie Wolves had the upper hand early, scoring the only goal of the first half at the 23:55 mark. Jacob Miller was stymied by Sessler on a point-blank shot, but the rebound caromed right back to him, and the sophomore deposited that rebound into the net to give NWU a 1-0 advantage.
Â
Nebraska Wesleyan, which held a 21-6 edge in first-half shots — including 13-2 in shots on goal — continued to pepper the SMU net over the game's final 45 minutes, but Sessler was up to the challenge each time.
Â
Saint Mary's finally pulled even with 6:34 to play in regulation, when Hurley — the Cardinals' penalty kick king — converted on his third PK in three tries this season to knot the game at 1-1.
Â
Fellow senior
Jake Wing (Verona, Wis.) started the game in goal, stopping both shots he faced in nine minutes of work, before giving way to Sessler, who made several acrobat saves en route to his career-best 13-save performance.
Â
The Cardinals (3-3-2 overall) return to nonconference action on Wednesday, when they travel to Appleton, Wis., for a 6 p.m. matchup against Lawrence.
