SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• RUNNING OF THE COWS: Grant Schneider (Moorhead, Minn.) — who finished 15th among MIAC runners in the event — led the way for the Cardinal men, breaking the tape in 26:56.80, while Caeli McMahon (Holmen, Wis.) was the SMU women’s top finisher for a second straight meet, posting a 6K time of 26:18.20 | Recap
• AUGUSTANA INVITE: Schneider kicked off his sophomore campaign in much the same fashion as he ended his freshman’s — leading the Cardinal charge with a four-mile time of 21:09.44 at the season-opening Augustana Twilight on Sept. 1 — while McMahon led the charge for the Cardinal women, posting a 5K time of 21:41.28 | Recap
• LEADERS OF THE PACK: Schneider has been the top male finisher for the Cardinals in each of the team’s last nine races — including all seven a year ago. On the women’s side, four different runners have led the way over the past two seasons, including McMahon twice this season, and Kendra Klobe (Glencoe, Minn.), Caroline Gearin, and Emily Kern (Buffalo, Minn.) a year ago.
• GETTING THEIR FEET WET: The Cardinals boasted nine runners who competed in their first collegiate race on Sept. 1 at the Augustana Twilight — Ryan Topolski (Onalaska, Wis. / 22:00.03), Isaiah Fitzgerald (Rochester, Minn. / 22:15.36), Sean Smyth (Pinehurst, N.C. / 22:34.97), Gabe Schonknecht (Chicago, Ill. / 22:43.35), Delorean Peterson (Blair, Wis. / 22:51.49), Caden Fisher (Gardner, Kan. / 24:04.48), Evan Finney (West End, N.C. / 25:24.84), Rheanna Hopkins (Bruce, Wis. / 22:53.36), and Alyssa Kuffel (Rice Lake, Minn. / 27:12.05).
• POST-SEASON HONORS: Schneider collected honorable-mention All-MIAC honors after placing 22nd overall at the MIAC Championships on Oct. 29, 2022. He is the first Saint Mary’s cross country athlete to claim conference honors since Jovan Newsum was named All-MIAC First Team after placing third overall in 2016.
