SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their three matches at the Subway Stinger Classic sitting at 3-1 overall
• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s collecting three straight wins to open the Sugar Loaf Classic last weekend — sweeping Marian and Lawrence, and outlasting UMN Morris 3-2 — before falling in three sets to Elmhurst in their final match of the two-day event.
• SWEEPING UP: Three of Saint Mary’s four matches this season have been decided by 3-0 sweeps — the long exception, the Cardinals’ 3-2 win over UMN Morris last Saturday. … Six of Saint Mary’s nine wins last season were 3-0 sweeps.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) was named MIAC Specialty Player of the Week on Tuesday, after racking up racking up 136 assists, two assist-dig double-doubles and eight service aces in SMU’s four Sugar Loaf Classic matches.
• ON THE ATTACK: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) — who ended the 2022 season leading the team with 346 kills — picked up right where she left off, delivering a team-high 69 kills in SMU’s four Sugar Loaf Classic matches. … Kali Olson (New York Mills, Minn.) chipped in 39 kills, followed by Maddie Baker (Savage, Minn.) with 26, and Jazzy Davis (La Crosse, Wis.) with 17. … As a team, Saint Mary’s has amassed 169 kills and is hitting .180.
• DOUBLE DIGITS: McNally has recorded at least 10 kills in all four of the Cardinals’ matches this season, including a season-high 24 against UMN Morris last Saturday.
• HITTING 20 x 2: Saint Mary’s boasted two players with 20+ kills in its 3-2 win over UMN Morris last Saturday — McNally led the charge with 24 and Olson chipped in 21.
• CAREER BESTS: The Cardinals had a pair of players post career-highs of 10 or more kills at last weekend’s Sugar Loaf Classic. Olson recorded a career-best 21 kills against UMN Morris last Saturday, while Baker recorded 10 vs. Lawrence the previous evening.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) accounted for 136 of the team’s 151 assists in the Cardinals’ four Sugar Loaf Classic matches last week. … VanErp set career-highs in assists in each of her first three matches — dishing out 30 against Marian, 32 vs. Lawrence, and a current career-best 46 against UMN Morris — and has delivered at least 25 helpers in all four matches this season.
• DOUBLING UP: McNally, who led the team with 14 double-doubles in 2022, recorded a pair of kill-dig double-doubles last weekend, while VanErp notched the first two set-dig double-doubles of her collegiate career.
• DIGGING IT: Lindsey Rossow (Rochester, Minn.) was the team’s digs leader at the Sugar Loaf Classic, amassing 59 digs, followed by McNally with 41, Allison Wu (Woodbury, Minn.) with 35, VanErp with 33, and Devann Clemens (Chatfield, Minn.) with 26. … SMU had three players notch career-highs in digs at last weekend’s Sugar Loaf Classic — Rossow posted a career-high 30 digs against UMN Morris last Saturday, Wu posted a career-best 12 digs vs. Marian last Friday, and VanErp’s 10 digs against both Lawrence and Elmhurst were also career-highs.
• SERVING UP ACES: Along with her team-leading 136 assists, VanErp also leads the team with eight service aces, three more than Olson, and four up on Clemens and Wu. … As a team, Saint Mary’s owns 27 aces through four matches. … Saint Mary’s recorded a season-high eight aces against Marian last Friday.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: SMU boasts 169 kills (12.07 kps), 151 assists, 27 aces, 231 digs, and 22 blocks in four matches. … The Cardinals recorded a single-match season-high 56 kills against UMN Morris last Saturday, while also setting season-highs in assists (51), and digs (88). … SMU is 2-2 in the first set this season, while going 3-1 in the second.
UW-SUPERIOR SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Yellowjackets head into their home tournament sitting at 2-2 overall, splitting their four matches at last weekend’s season-opening Ripon Classic.
• LAST ACTION: UW-Superior split both days of the two-day Ripon Classic last weekend, beating Mount Mary (3-0) and losing to U. of Dubuque (3-1) last Friday, before falling to MSOE (3-1) and sweeping Ripon (3-0) the following afternoon.
• ROAD WARRIORS: After this weekend’s four home contests, UW-Superior will play its next seven matches on the road. All told, UW-Superior will have played 11 of its first 15 contests away from Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
• TAKING ON THE MIAC: Friday’s match against Saint Mary’s is the first of six contests against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Superior also has two matches with St. Scholastica, and solo contests against Concordia, St. Catherine, and Hamline on its slate.
• ON THE ATTACK: The Yellowjackets boast seven players who have recorded 10 or more kills through four matches, led by Emma Crandell (33), Kaylin Plautz (26), and Maiana Stark (25). … Plautz racked up a single-match season-high 14 kills in UW-Superior’s 3-0 sweep of Ripon last Saturday.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Colleen Claude dished out a team-leading 65 assists in UW-Superior’s four tournament matches last weekend, while Renay Rieder chipped in 43 helpers and Lizzy Schmidt added 20. … Claude has recorded 10 or more assists in all four matches, including a season-best 20-assist effort against Ripon last Saturday. Rieder, meanwhile, owns 14, 14, and 15 assists in the three matches she’s played in. … As a team, UW-S has delivered a season-high 36 assists in three of its four matches this season.
• DIGGING IT: Jenna Anderson is the team-leader in digs with 73, while Stark (38), Claude (31), Lindsey Racine (27), and Crandell (23) have all posted at least 20 digs through four matches. … Anderson, who has reached double figures in digs in all four matches this season, posted a season-high 23 digs against both U. of Dubuque and MSOE last weekend.
• SERVING UP ACES: UW-Superior has amassed 17 service aces in four matches, and has gotten at least one ace from 10 different players. … Rieder and Anderson lead the team with three aces each, one more than Schmidt, Crandell, and Racine.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: As a team, UW-Superior has collected 154 kills in four matches (11.0 kps), while owning 141 assists (10.0 aps), 17 aces, and 267 digs. … The Yellowjackets recorded season-highs in kills (42) and assists (36) against Ripon last Saturday, while posting a season-best 78 digs against U. of Dubuque last Friday. … Both of UW-Superior’s wins have been 3-0 decisions, while both of the Yellowjackets’ losses have come in four sets. … The Yellowjackets have won the opening set in both of their wins this season, and dropped the opening set in both losses. …
NORTHLAND SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Northland enters its first contests of the 2023 season on the heels of an 11-13 overall record in 2022, including a 5-9 mark in UMAC action.
• LAST ACTION: The Lumberjills went 1-1 in their final two matches of the 2022 campaign, shutting out Crown 3-0 on Oct. 28 in St. Bonifacius, Minn., before dropping a 3-0 decision to UM-Morris the following day in Morris, Minn.
• NEW AT THE HELM: Hope Neargarder is in her first season at the helm for the Lumberjills. Neargarder comes to Northland after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill., where she helped guide IC to back-to-back trips to the MWC Conference Tournament.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Northland played 16 of its 24 matches last season on the road, including sporting a 3-3 mar in neutral-site contests. The Lumberjills closed out the year with a 5-3 record on their home court.
• ON THE ATTACK: Larissa Fossum led the Lumberjills’ offense a year ago, collecting a team-best 287 kills. Fossum was one of four Northland players to eclipse the 100-kill mark, being joined by Bailey Wynn (205), Shelby Justman (200), and Elizabeth Montgomery (156). … Fossum delivered a single-match season-high 20 kills against Bethany Lutheran on Oct. 14.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Rachel Callow accounted for 639 of the team’s 889 assists a year ago. Megan Van Gheem (102) was the only other Lumberjill with more than 100 helpers in 2022. …
• DOUBLING UP: Fossum accumulated 14 kill/dig double-doubles last season, while Wynn chipped in four.
• DIGGING IT: Northland boasted five players with 100 or more digs last season, led by Alexa Zadra with 378. Fossum (285), Wynn (220), Callow (193), and Annika Herlevi (182) also surpassed the 100-dig marker.
• SERVING UP ACES: Northland collected 156 aces a year ago, and got at least one ace from 11 of the 14 players who saw action in 2022. … Alexa Zadra led the way for the Lumberjills with 52 aces, followed by Fossum with 27 and Callow with 26.
BETHANY LUTHERAN SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Vikings enter their second straight road tournament weekend sitting at 2-2 overall, having split their four matches at the Central (Iowa) Invitational.
• LAST ACTION: Bethany Lutheran came out on the winning, and losing ends of 3-2 decisions in its first two matches at last weekend’s Central (Iowa) Invitational — falling 3-2 to Grinnell and winning 3-2 vs. Monmouth — before closing out the weekend with a 3-0 loss to host Central and a 3-1 win over Knox.
• ROAD WARRIORS: The Vikings will play their first 12 matches on the road. BLC does not play its first home contest until Sept. 27, when the Vikings entertain St. Olaf in a 7 p.m. matchup.
• TAKING ON THE MIAC: Bethany Lutheran will face six teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season — including three this weekend at the UW-Superior Invitational. Along with this weekend’s foes — Concordia, St. Scholastica, and Saint Mary’s — BLC also has Gustavus, St. Olaf, and Augsburg on its slate.
• ON THE ATTACK: The Vikings boast six players who have recorded at least 10 kills through four matches, including three — Lexiss Trygg (49), Maddie Meyer (37), and Kate Maag (35) who have eclipsed the 30-kill mark., … Trygg delivered a single-match season-high 17 kills against Grinnell last Friday, while Maag notched a 16-kill effort against Monmouth in BLC’s second match on Friday.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Paloma Garcia De Fuentes has accounted for 127 of the team’s 155 assists through four matches. … Garcia De Fuentes has delivered at least 20 helpers in all four matches, including a season-high 45-assist showing against Knox last Saturday. … Garcia De Fuentes owns three assist-dig double-doubles, highlighted by a 27-assist, 27-dig showing against Grinnell last Friday.
• DIGGING IT: Maddi Wendland leads the Vikings with 71 digs, followed by Garcia De Fuentes (56) and Trygg (50). … Wendland posted a season-high 28 digs against Knox last Saturday.
• SERVING UP ACES: BLC has amassed 38 service aces, and has gotten at least one ace from nine different players. … Femke Peters leads the Vikings with eight aces, one more than Esther Peeters and two up on Trygg.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: As a team, BLC has recorded 175 kills (10.29 kps), 155 assists, 38 aces, 300 digs, and 30 blocks. … The Vikings racked up 53 kills against Monmouth last Friday and tallied a season-high 54 kills against Knox the following day. … BLC’s 51 assists and 88 digs vs. Knox last Saturday were season-highs.
