SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s steps out of conference play for the final time with Tuesday’s road showdown against Lawrence sitting at 5-9-2 overall, including sporting a 3-4-1 record after its first eight MIAC contests.
• LAST ACTION: Colin Tushie (Prior Lake, Minn.) recorded his first collegiate hat trick in leading SMU to a 5-3 win over St. Olaf last Friday, while Noah Kiemel (Colorado Springs, Colo.) delivered his first career two-goal game in leading the Cardinals to a sweep-clinching 3-2 win over the Oles the following evening.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Last Friday’s game against St. Olaf was the fifth straight home game — and the seventh in the last nine games — for the Cardinals. … SMU is sitting at 4-2-2 at home this season, while picking up its first win away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena (1-7-0) with last Saturday’s 3-2 win over St. Olaf.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: With his three goals against St. Olaf last Friday, Tushie moved into the team lead with eight goal, one more than Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.). Noah Kiemel is sitting third with four goals, followed by Carter Newpower (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Nikita Sheberov (Obninsk, Russia) with two each. … Winter netted SMU’s first goal of the season at 3:13 of the first period in SMU’s 6-3 loss to MSOE on Oct. 28.
• FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL: SMU boasts six players who have scored their first collegiate goals this season — Newpower, Connor Abric (Hayward, Wis.), Blake Arneson (Red Wing, Minn.), Clay Allen, Cooper Smyl, and Noah Kiemel. … Saint Mary’s had six players who scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform a year ago.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s eight goals against Lawrence on Nov. 21 came from seven different players — with Winter the only Cardinal with more than one tally. … SMU’s 12 points (4 G, 8 A) against Gustavus on Dec. 2 came from 11 different players — only Tushie (2 G) had more than one point.
• TOSSING THE HAT: Tushie recorded his first collegiate hat trick in the Cardinals’ 5-3 win over St. Olaf last Tuesday. It’s the third hat trick in the last two seasons for the Cardinals, who got three-goal games from Sheberov and Brady Lindauer a year ago.
• MULTIPLE GOALS: With his three goals against St. Olaf last Friday, Tushie now owns two multiple-goal games this season, having also scored twice against Gustavus on Dec. 1. … Winter also boasts two multiple-goal games this season, scoring twice against Lawrence on Nov. 21 and twice vs. Northland on Jan. 5. … Newpower and Noah Kiemel have accounted for SMU’s other two multiple-goal games — Newpower found the back of the net twice against Northland on Jan. 5, while Kiemel scored twice against St. Olaf last Saturday.
• LENDING A HAND: Winter heads into Tuesday’s matchup with Lawrence owning a team-high six assists, one more than Jack Campion (Crystal, Minn.). Tushie, Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.), Abric, Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.), and Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.) are all sitting with four helpers, with Arneson, Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.) and Ciolli owning three each. … Poellinger collected his first collegiate three-assist game against Northland on Jan. 5.
• POINT PRODUCERS: With his seven goals and six assists, Winter sits atop the team’s points race with 13, one more than Tushie. Tharaldson has amassed six points, followed by Campion, Abric, Young, and Noah Kiemel with five. Seven other Cardinals have collected four points. … Tushie recorded a single-game season- and career-high four points with his three goals and an assist against St. Olaf last Friday. Winter (2 G, 1 A) and Poellinger (3 A) have recorded season-high three-point games this season.
• NETTING THE GAME-WINNER: Winter leads the team with two game-winning goals, with Tushie, Noah Kiemel, and Nick Kiemel netting the Cardinals’ other three game-winners.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) has started 13 of SMU’s 16 games in goal, compiling a 3.48 goals-against-average and .892 save percentage. … A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) has made the other three starts between the pipes, boasting a 4.28 GAA and .866 save %. … Sankner locked up his second career shutout in SMU’s 2-0, conference-opening win over Hamline on Nov. 3, stopping all 24 shots he faced. … Sankner has amassed 348 saves in 13 starts — including a season-high 37-save effort against UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 10 — while Ruskowski (132 saves) kicked out a season-best 37 shots against Lake Forest on Oct. 27. … Sankner delivered a career-high 45-save performance against Augsburg on Nov. 18, 2022, while Ruskowski stopped a career-best 42 shots against St. Olaf on Jan. 13, 2023.
• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s has scored first in eight of its 16 games, going 6-2-1 when netting the game’s first goal. … SMU is now 20-7-1 when scoring first since the start of the 2021-22 season, while going 2-21-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Twenty-seven of Saint Mary’s 37 goals have come at even strength. … SMU has gone 10-for-69 with the man advantage through 16 games (14.5 %), and scored a season-high three power-play goals against Lawrence on Nov. 21. … SMU’s opponents, meanwhile, have netted 17 of their 63 goals on the power play, going 17-for-63 with the man advantage (27.0 %). … SMU has scored 10 times in the first period, 14 times in the second, and 13 in the third. LAWRENCE SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Vikings head into their final nonconference game of the season sitting at 3-12-1 overall. LU is 2-7-1 through the first 10 games of the NCHA slate.
• LAST TIME OUT: Lawrence came out on the short end of both of its conference games against fifth-ranked Adrian last weekend in Appleton, Wis., falling to the Bulldogs 8-2 last Friday, before dropping a 4-1 decision in the rematch the following day.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Tuesday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the third straight home game in a five-day stretch, having hosted Adrian for a pair of games this past weekend. LU has picked up two of its three wins on its home ice. The Vikings are 2-6-0 at home, while sitting at 1-6-1 away from the Appleton Ice Center.
• LIMPING IN: Lawrence heads into its mid-week showdown against Saint Mary’s mired in a nine-game losing streak. The Vikings have not won since Nov. 17, when the Vikings rolled to an 8-0 win over Concordia (Wis.). Since then, LU has fallen to Concordia (Wis.) (4-1), Saint Mary’s (8-4), Buffalo State (3-2), Lake Forest (6-3, 3-2), UW-River Falls (4-3, 4-2), and Adrian (8-2, 4-1).
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Miles McCue heads into Tuesday’s game against Saint Mary’s leading the team with seven goals, one more than Jack Michels and Cole Schneider, and two up on Cory Checco. Carter Cloutier and Cody Brekke have each scored three times, with Ethan Beaumont, Oliver DeCroock, and Jeb Dee chipping in two goals apiece. … McCue netted a single-game season-high four goals against Concordia (Wis.) on Nov. 17.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Beaumont has already reached double digits in assists, owning a team-leading 10 helpers. Checco and Kyle Gierman are second on the team with seven assists, followed by McCue, Michels, Schneider, and Jayden Jensen with five. … Michels, Jensen, and Schneider have all posted a season-high three assists in a game this season.
• POINT PRODUCERS: The Vikings boast five players with 10 or more points through 16 games, led by Beaumont, Checco, and McCue with 12. Michels and Schneider have also reached double figures with 11 points each. … McCue’s four-point game against Concordia (Wis.) on Nov. 17 are a season high.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Nolan Mahaffey and Owen Carlson have shared the goaltending duties this season, with Mahaffey compiling a 3.82 goals-against-average and .889 save percentage in nine starts, with Carlson boasting a 4.12 GAA and .879 save % in seven starts. … Mahaffey has stopped a team-high 287 shots — including a season-high 54-save effort against Adrian last Friday. Carlson, meanwhile, has stopped 197 of the 224 shots’ he’s faced, and posting a season-best 48 saves against MSOE on Nov. 3. … Mahaffey owns LU’s lone shutout, stopping all 24 shots he faced in blanking Concordia (Wis.) on Nov. 17.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Lawrence has been outscored 64-42 through 16 games, including 12-10 in the first period and 37-15 in the second. LU holds a 17-14 scoring edge in the game’s final 20 minutes. … Thirteen of LU’s 42 goals this season have come on the power play. The Vikings are 13-for-59 (22.0 %) with the man advantage.
