WINONA, Minn. - On Tuesday night, the Men's Soccer would host the visiting St. Olaf Oles for more conference play, and would continue their conference losing streak with a loss to the visiting team.
Â
The game would start with some short back-and-forth play, no team taking hold. However, the Oles would break through with a shot attempt, however an excellent hustle play by
Lars Bergo would clear the ball out of the field. Over the next four minutes the Oles would be relentless with three more shot attempts, the latter two both saved by
Daniel Sessler.
Â
The Cardinals would continue to be stone-walled, every attempt to move up the field stolen right back by the Oles, leading to more shot attempts by the visitors, increasing their total to eight shots at the 17th minute mark.
Â
In the 28th minute,
Cohan Hare broke through and took his second shot of the game, however, the Oles goalkeeper saved it. The Cardinal's defense would step up and slow down the aggressiveness shown by the Oles, grinding their shot attempts to a hold going into the last 10 minutes of the half.
Â
With five minutes left in the half, the Cardinals would commit a foul, leading to an Ole penalty kick. However, Sessler would expertly save it. Not letting up, he Oles would keep possession and continue their assault. It would culminate in a goal for the visitors, making the game 1-0 Oles with four minutes left.
Â
Sessler would end the first half with eight saves and Hare would end it with two shots.
Â
Within the first six minutes of the second half, the Oles showed no signs of slowing down. They took four shots, and the fourth shot at the 51st minute would find the back of the net, resulting in a second goal for the Oles, making the game 2-0 in favor of the visitors
Â
Thomas Laaksonen would try to steal the momentum back with a shot of his own, however it would miss the top of the net. After that shot, St. Olaf took control right back and wouldn't be deterred. They would keep the ball on the Cardinals side or in midfield for the next 17 minutes until the Cardinals would finally break through with a shot from Santiago Moreno at the 72nd minute mark. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it wouldn't find the net, instead it would be saved by the goalkeeper.
Â
That would end up being the Cardinals last shot attempt of the night as the Oles took full control of the game until the clock hit zero, resulting in a 2-0 win for the visitors.
Â
Sessler ended the night with 14 saves, and the team as a whole had 4 shots.Â
Â
The Cardinals will have a road game in Duluth, MN against conference opponent College of St. Scholastica on Saturday, October 19th.
