DULUTH, Minn. - The Cardinal men's soccer team traveled to Duluth, Minnesota to take on the St. Scholastica Saints Saturday afternoon and notch their first win in conference play with a 3-2 win.
A minute into the game, the Cardinals pushed the ball upfield to earn a corner which led to a shot by
Diego Giles that led to another quick corner kick attempt. The two teams traded shots on goal after the initial Cardinal push.
Lars Bergo sent a ball to freshman
Thomas Laaksonen who went one on one with the Saint goalie and was tripped up. The Saints goalie recorded a red card for tripping Laaksonen and gave the Cardinals a penalty kick. The Saints now playing the rest of the game a man down.
At the 30
th minute,
Cohan Hare nailed the free kick attempt to put the Cardinals ahead by one. Within eight minutes, the Saints responded scoring on
Daniel Sessler after a defensive miscommunication.
With nine shots on goal for the Cardinals in the first the Cardinals were tied at the half.
Caleb Gilbert took the first shot attempt of the second half a minute in to start the half the same way as the first. Hare went on to take the next three shot attempts for the Cardinals as they were looking to get the lead back.
At the 61
st minute,
Martin Garr sent a ball to the back of the net soaring past the Saint keeper and it was assisted by Laaksonen off a header from a nicely placed corner kick by
Aldo Campagne for the Cardinals to take the 2-1 lead.
The Cardinals continued to push ahead and use their set pieces to their advantage. They found themselves with another corner kick attempt at the 74
th minute and a high placed kick by
Lucas de Godoy let
Ryan Pavelka get his head underneath it and into the back of the net to take a two goal lead at 3-1.
The Saints were not going away as a foul was committed in the box by the Cardinals leading to a penalty shot for the Saint to get the deficit to one.
Sessler made a crucial save with a minute remaining in the game and the Cardinals packed in their defense to secure the win.
Hare nets his eighth goal of the season and leads the Cardinals. Garr gets his third of the season Pavelka nets the first of his collegiate career!
