WINONA, Minn. – It was a beautiful day to have a soccer game at the Oak and to celebrate the Saint Mary's seniors. The Cardinals took on top ranked Carleton Knights, Saint Mary's the two seed, in a tough match up Saturday afternoon as both teams fell scoreless.
Â
The high stakes game did not disappoint, the Cardinals came out with a burst of energy and controlled the game the first 15 minutes.
Lauryn Skoruppa took the first shot being saved of the match at the fourth minute of the match recording three shots to Knights none.
Â
The Knights first shot on goal came at the 2th minute with a save from goalkeeper,
Anna Peckosh. They began to bring the pressure as they recorded two shots that were blocked and a corner all within the span of a minute to test the Cardinals back line.
Â
The Cardinals struck late in the half with a minute left earning two back-to-back corner kicks, resulting in two clears.
Â
Both teams were beating up on each other to get that first recorded goal. Neither succeeded as every breakaway chance led to a turnover or a cleared ball. Scoreless at the half.
Â
Carleton came out the aggressor in the second half controlling the ball on the Cardinals half and getting a corner kick attempt five minutes in. Other than an incredible shot by that was saved from the Knight keeper, the Knights had the pressure on the Cardinals end the majority of the next 20 minutes.
Â
The Knights accumulated three shots on goal and two corners that the Cardinal defense stopped to keep them scoreless. Kristan LaDue, Maya Watcher,
Malerie Williams, and
Dakota Leonard deserve their flowers after that defensive stand.
Â
Every chance that the Cardinals pushed forward, the Knights defense pushed right back, not allow the Cardinals any rhythm.
Â
The Knights had two late looks to try to take a lead. Neither team had the golden goal and the teams ended the match in a tie.
Up next for the women's soccer team is against non-conference opponent UW-River Falls in River Falls on Wednesday, Oct. 30
th for an afternoon start at 4 p.m.
