ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Cardinal women's hockey team traveled to St. Paul on Saturday looking to split the Pipers in the second game of the two on the weekend. The Cardinals would fall to the Pipers in the second game, 5-3.

The teams traded shots to start the first period and the Cardinals landed their second power play opportunity at the 8th minute and after taking the next six shots at the Piper goaltender, senior

With less than five minutes left of the period, the Pipers tied the game at one. Before the half was over, the Pipers tallied another goal to take their first lead of the game.

The Cardinals started the second period on a power play and had three quality looks to tie the game within the first 45 seconds.

The teams were racking up penalties and the Cardinals recorded a costly one. The Pipers capitalized on a power play at the 15th minute mark to take the two goal lead. A minute later they notched another.

Saint Mary's was out-worked in the second period giving up two goals to fall 4-1 before the final period.Â

A burst of energy came from forward
Teagan Phillips as she netted the team's second goal at the second minute of action on a power play and her first of the season. Teammate
Jenna Kurkowski recorded the assist with an across the ice pass in front of the Piper goalie with plenty of time left.

Despite the deficit, the Cardinals never gave up and kept taking chances at the Pipers. Phillips also netted the third goal for the Cardinals late but any chance for a comeback was too late.

The Cardinals return home on Tuesday, November 19th at 7 p.m. to take on UW-Eau Claire for their second match up of the season. Cardinals took down the ranked Blugolds in a 3-2 victory earlier this season.Â
