MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Cardinal women's hockey team headed north for the first game of their two-game series against Concordia College on Friday night. The Cardinals fell in an overtime thriller to the Cobbers 2-1.
Both teams had a slow start, taking a shot about every other minute. With just under five minutes left in the game, the Cardinals finally got on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead over the Cobbers.
A power play allowed the puck to move freely in the offensive zone, and senior
Sidney Polzin capitalized with a late-period goal, assisted by senior
Allie Urlaub and sophomore
Celia Midtbo. The Cardinals closed out the period by taking the final five shots on goal, maintaining their 1-0 lead as they headed into the second period.
The Cardinals came out strong, firing the first six shots on goal and earning the period's first power play. The Cobbers responded with equal intensity, scoring their first goal of the game at the 11-minute mark to knot the score at 1-1.
The teams entered a thrilling third period, both eager to score the first goal and regain the lead. However, neither side could break through, as both played lock-down defense. The teams settled for taking their game into overtime.
In under a minute of the game, the Cardinals would give up the game winning goal to the Cobbers and would suffer defeat in their fifth game of conference action and fall 7-4 on the season and 2-3 in conference play.
This win for the Cobbers marks the first time the team has defeated the Cardinals since the 2020 season and the Cardinals five game winning streak is snapped.
The team will bounce back for game two tomorrow at 2 p.m.
