MOORHEAD, Minn. - On Saturday afternoon, the Saint Mary's women's hockey team (8-4) defeated Concordia College in the second game of their weekend series, earning a split for the weekend.
Alexa March nailed her first career goal as a Cardinal in the 6-4 victory.
Â
The Cardinals got off to a strong start in the first period, taking a 3-1 lead over the Cobbers. Freshman March scored the opening goal just four minutes into the game, with an assist from
Taverie Sherner, marking her first point in a Saint Mary's uniform.Â
Â
The Cobbers responded less than a minute later to tie the game early. The Cardinals had a better response taking the next two goals of the period.
Â
For the second goal of the game it was from an all-senior effort.
Sidney Polzin scored on a power play with assists from
Allie Urlaub and
Kas Kingston at the 6-minute mark. With five minutes left in the period,
Reese Heitzman added her seventh goal of the season, giving the Cardinals a two-goal lead.
Â
Both teams scored once in the second period, but the Cobbers struck first, cutting the Cardinals' lead to one at the 10-minute mark. Less than a minute later, who else but Polzin answered with a goal of her own, restoring the two-goal lead as the teams headed into the third period.
Â
Senior
Jenna Kurkowski nets the opening goal of the third period with an assist from
Kenzie Meland to jump the score 5-2. To put the game away, sophomore Sophia Paudano hauled in the sixth goal of the game for the Cardinals.
Â
Two late goals from the Cobbers weren't enough to overcome the Cardinals lead, who had built a solid cushion. Saint Mary's went on to split the conference series with Concordia, improving to 3-3 in conference play.
Â
The team will take an extended holiday break and will be back in action on January 17th at 5 p.m. at second ranked Gustavus.
