OWATONNA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team was good in doubles — and even better in singles — and the result was a convincing 9-0 nonconference win over Crown Friday evening at the Owatonna Tennis Center.
The Cardinals dropped just seven games cruising to wins in the three doubles matches, before losing just 19 games in the six singles matches, including three 6-0, 6-1 victories.
"I was really happy with the way the guys played today," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We got solid play up-and-down the lineup. It was a good win, and nice to see the guys get back on the winning track."
Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) and
Michael Johnson (Hastings, Minn.) teamed for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles, while
Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Minn.)/
Trevor Smiley (Minnetonka, Minn.) won 8-3 at No. 1 and
Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.)/
Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa) added an 8-4 victory at No. 2.
Huemoeller, Raabolle, Stene,
Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.), Smiley, and
Zak Farley (Sartell, Minn.) followed up with straight-set singles victories, with Besek, Smiley, and Farley all dropped just one game at Nos 4, 5, and 6, respectively.
The Cardinals (4-4 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, when they welcome Gustavus to the Winona Tennis Center for a 1:30 p.m. matchup.
