SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their matches against Crown and Gustavus sitting at 3-4 overall, while sporting an 0-1 mark in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s finished 2-1 in its three nonconference matches in Green Bay, Wis., last weekend — beating Lawrence (7-2) and Ripon (6-3), before dropping a 7-2 decision to St. Norbert.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s match against Crown is the fourth straight road contest for the Cardinals, who are 1-3 on their home court, while going 2-1 on the road. SMU finished 5-3 at home and 4-8 on the road a year ago.
• IN THE FALL: Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals at the 2023 ITA Regional/Midwest Open last September, collecting a pair of singles wins en route to reaching the ITA consolation semifinals. … Philip Apel (North Oaks, Minn.), Michael Johnson (Hastings, Minn.), Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.), and Zak Farley (Sartell, Minn.) all picked up one singles victory at the Midwest Open.
• SINGLED OUT: Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) comes into the weekend owning a team-best five singles wins, one more than Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.). Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.) and Philip Apel (North Oaks, Minn.) are tied for third with three singles victories. … Stene closed out 2023 with a team-leading 12 singles wins.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: The Cardinals have had seven singles matches be extended to a third-set super-breaker this season, with SMU going 3-4 in those seven contests. … Saint Mary’s had 25 singles contests extended to a third set in 2023 — including three each in matches against Saint John’s, Northwestern (Minn.) and St. Norbert. … SMU was 14-11 in its three-set matches last season and with its 2-3 mark this year, are now 38-37 in three-setters over the last three seasons.
• GOING THE DISTANCE II: Saint Mary’s had five of its 13 singles sets in its 7-2 win over Lawrence on Feb. 9 decided by a tie-breaker — including a 7-6 (8), 7-6 (5) loss by Besek at No. 6.
• DOUBLING UP: Huemoeller and Raabolle are the only doubles combination to play all seven matches together, going 4-3 at No. 1. Rodning and Trevor Smiley (Minnetonka, Minn.) have collected a pair of wins as a doubles combo en route to a 2-2 showing, while four different doubles combinations have accounted for SMU’s other four wins. … Individually, Raabolle and Huemoeller lead the team with four doubles wins each, one more than Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa), followed by Apel, Besek, and Smiley with two each…. Raabolle led the team in doubles wins with nine last season, going 9-9 — including 6-5 partnered with Rodning.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther in their season opener on Jan. 27, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 21 straight against the Knights. SMU has never lost to Martin Luther in program history.
• OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE: With their 3-3 start in nonconference play this season, the Cardinals are now 81-40 in non-MIAC matches since 2012.
CROWN SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Crown heads into its nonconference match against Saint Mary’s have played just one contest, felling to Concordia 9-0 last Saturday.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Polars won just 12 games in their six singles matches against Concordia last Saturday in dropping their season-opener to the Cobbers 9-0 at the Owatonna Tennis Center. … Crown finished the 2023 season with a 1-11 record, including a 1-9 mark in UMAC play.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s match against Saint Mary’s is the second straight home contest for the Polars, who fell to Concordia in their season-opener last Saturday. … Crown finished 1-4 a year ago on its home courts, while going winless (0-11) away from the Owatonna Tennis Center.
• SINGLED OUT: Crown failed to win a set in its season-opening loss to Concordia, and only Dawson Richardson was able to win at least two games in both sets, falling 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. …
• DOUBLING UP: The Polars had little luck in doubles play against the Cobbers on Feb. 3, winning just one game in falling 8-0, 8-0, and 8-1.
GUSTAVUS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: After a five-match exhibition trip to Florida, the Gusties kicked off their 2024 season with a 4-3 loss to NCAA Division II University of North Dakota on Feb. 3 and a 9-0 nonconference victory over UW-Eau Claire last Saturday.
• LAST TIME OUT: Gustavus did not drop more than three games in sweeping the three doubles matches and added six straight-set wins in singles to beat UW-Eau Claire 9-0 last Saturday in St. Peter, Minn.
• BUSY DAY: Along with their conference matchup at Saint Mary’s, the Gusties will also play home matches against both Bethel and Grinnell on Saturday. … GAC, 1-0 at home and 0-1 on the road this season, closed out 2023 15-2 at home, while going 11-9 away from Swanson Center.
• STREAKING ALONG: Gustavus picked up its 34th straight MIAC regular-season title in 2023, finishing the regular-season schedule a perfect 9-0. GAC followed that up with back-to-back 5-0 victories over Saint John’s and Carleton to claim their 12th consecutive MIAC Playoff title. GAC defeated UW-Whitewater (5-1) and the University of Chicago (5-4) in the opening two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, before falling to Case Western (5-1) in the quarterfinals to end the year 26-11.
• MASTER OF THE MIAC: Gustavus’ 9-0 win over UW-Eau Claire last Saturday was the 300th career coaching win for the Gusties Tommy Valentini. Valentini is the 16th head coach in the 92-year history of the men's tennis program at Gustavus. He has directed the program to 13 consecutive MIAC Championships and holds an overall record of 300-116 and an MIAC mark of 120-0.
• SINGLED OUT: Jack Bergmeyer and Dominik Knutson have picked up singles wins in both of the Gusties’ 2024 dual matches this season, with Rafael de Camargo Costa, Gage Gohl, Marco Siviero, and Caleb Fridinger all collecting one dual-match victory. … Including tournament play, Gohl leads the team with nine singles wins, followed by Bergmeyer with six. … Siviero is the only Gustie to have played both singles matches at the same position, going 1-1 at No. 1.
• DOUBLING UP: The doubles teams Siviero and Josh Christensen, and Gohl and Tyler Haddorff are both a perfect 2-0 in dual matches this season, while Gohl/Haddorff own a team-best 10 overall doubles victories and Siviero/Christensen are one back with nine.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Gustie come into the weekend ranked No. 12 in the ITA national poll. … This season, the Gusties are 8-4 in dual-match singles contests, while owning a near-perfect 5-1 mark in doubles.
