ORLANDO, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team kicked off its final day of spring break competition in winning fashion Wednesday afternoon.
Â
And the Cardinals closed in the day in much the same fashion.
Â
Saint Mary's dominated Albion in its first match of the day, cruising to an 8-1 victory, before following that up with a second straight 8-1 win over King's College.
Â
"It was a great day for the ladies," said Saint Mary's women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg. "I thought we put together a really dominating performance to open against Albion, and then battled through a second match against King's — even though we were showing some weak legs in our second match toward the end."
Â
The Cardinals wasted no time taking control against Albion in their opening match, winning five of the six singles matches, before sweeping through the doubles portion of the nonconference contest with 8-0, 8-6, and 8-4 victories.
Â
Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.),
Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.),
Elena Ruzevich (Chicago, Ill.),
Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.), and
Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Minn.) all recorded straight-set singles wins, with
Emily Dondelinger (Bemidji, Minn.) dropping a three-set heartbreaker at No. 3, falling 2-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Â
Peterson/Ruzevich, Henderson/Dondelinger, and Boomgaarden/Buerman completed the lopsided victory with doubles wins against the Britons.
Â
The Cardinals grabbed a 3-0 lead after doubles play against King's, and then got straight-set wins from Peterson, Dondelinger, and Boomgaarden, while
Lillian Kimber (Duluth, Minn.) added a three-set, 3-6, 6-4, 10-3 win at No. 5, and Maddie Dossier (South St. Paul, Minn.) won by forget at No. 6 to complete the 8-1 victory.
Â
The Cardinals (5-5 overall) are now off until March 16-17, when they head to Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D., for back-to-back matches against UMN Morris (March 16) and Concordia (March 17).
