SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their spring trip matches against Adrian, King’s, and Albion sitting at 3-4 overall, while sporting an 0-3 mark in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s found itself staring at a 3-0 deficit after doubles — including a pair of 8-7 losses at No. 2 and No. 3 — and could not climb out of the hole in falling to St. Catherine in an MIAC match last Saturday at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
• WINNING BIG: Thirteen of SMU’s last 19 wins have either been 9-0 or 8-1 decisions — including a 9-0 sweep of Crown and a pair of 8-1 victories over UW-River Falls and Martin Luther this season.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Saint Mary’s is in the midst of playing seven of nine matches on the road. After playing at Crown on Feb. 16, and at home the following two days against Gustavus and Carleton, SMU returned to the road last Saturday at St. Catherine, and, after three “road” matches in Florida, the Cardinals will head to Fargo, N.D., for back-to-back matches against UMN Morris and Concordia. … SMU is 11-11 in its last 22 home matches — including 1-3 this season and 4-4 in 2023. … SMU has picked up 15 of its last 23 wins at the Winona TC.
• NEW TERRITORY: The Cardinals’ September showdown with UW-River Falls marked the first time in head coach Jeff Halberg’s 25-year tenure that SMU has played a dual match in the Fall of the academic year.
• STREAKING ALONG: With their 8-1 win over UW-RF on Sept. 16, Saint Mary’s has now faced the Falcons 20 times since 1997 — winning all 20 contests.
• STREAKING ALONG II: With their 8-1 victory against Martin Luther on Jan. 28, 2023, the Cardinals ran their winning streak over the Knights to 17. SMU is 18-1 overall against MLC — and have won nine of its last 10 between the two teams by 9-0 counts. … Saint Mary’s has dropped just 12 games in its nine doubles matches against the Knights over the last three years.
• PERFECTION: The Cardinals did not drop a game in their 9-0 sweep of Crown on Feb. 16 — winning all three doubles matches 8-0, and taking all six singles contests by identical 6-0, 6-0 outcomes.
• SINGLED OUT: Emily Dondelinger (Bemidji, Minn.), Elena Ruzevich (Chicago, Ill.), and Kathryn Stiegel (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) head into SMU’s three spring trip matches owning a team-best four singles wins, while Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.), Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.), and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) all own three singles wins. … Henderson closed out 2023 with a team-high eight singles wins. … As a team, Saint Mary’s is 22-20 in singles play this season.
• WIN NO. 1: Dondelinger and Ruzevich picked up their first collegiate singles wins in SMU’s 8-1 win over UW-River Falls on Sept. 16. Dondelinger won 2-6, 6-1, 10-7 at No. 3, while Ruzevich posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4. … Stiegel was the lone SMU player to pick up her first collegiate singles victory last season, winning 6-2, 6-3 against Bethany Lutheran on Feb. 25, 2023.
• MIXING THINGS UP: Saint Mary’s has used at least two different players at every position this season. SMU has used three different players at No. 5 singles, and two at each of the other five spots. The Cardinals used at least two different players at all six singles positions in 2023. Two different SMU players competed at No. 1 singles, while four competed from the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 slots, and five lined up in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
• DOUBLING UP: The Cardinals have had nine different doubles combinations account for their nine doubles wins this season — Henderson/Peterson (2-2), Ruzevich /Boomgaarden (2-2), Stiegel/Lillian Kimber (Duluth, Minn.) (1-1), Dondelinger/Henderson (1-1), Ruzevich/Peterson (1-1), and Boomgaarden/Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.). … Individually, Henderson, Peterson, Ruzevich, and Boomgaarden all share the team lead with three doubles victories. … As a team, SMU is 9-12 in doubles play this season.
• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: Thanks to their 3-1 show in their four nonconference matches this season — a 9-0 win over Crown, 8-1 wins over UW-River Falls and Martin Luther, and a 5-4 loss to Northwestern — the Cardinals are now 81-22 against nonconference opponents since 2012.
ADRIAN SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Bulldogs head into their 2024 spring trip boasting a 5-4 record through their nine fall season matches.
• LAST TIME OUT: Adrian has been off since Oct. 7, when they cruised to an 8-1 nonconference win over Indiana University Southeast in Adrian, Mich.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After opening the season with two straight road contests, the Bulldogs have played six of their last seven matches on their home courts. … Adrian sports a 3-3 record in its six home contests, while going 2-1 away from the Craft Tennis Complex in Adrian, Mich.
• ROLLERCOASTER RIDE: It’s been an up-and-down ride for the Bulldogs this season. After opening the season with a 5-4 win over Ohio Wesleyan, Adrian dropped two straight, won two straight, lost two in a row, and closed out the fall with back-to-back wins.
• SINGLED OUT: Claire Early has amassed a team-leading seven singles wins — boasting a 3-0 mark at No. 1 and a 4-2 showing at No. 2. … Hye Jin Eliot and Ava Hovey share the No. 2 spot on the team with six singles wins each, while Regan Snyder and Hope Bussecher have both chipped in four wins. … Early, Elliot, and Hovey all come into Adrian’s spring trip matches riding three-match winning streaks. … Snyder is the only Bulldog to play all nine matches at the same position, going 4-5 at No. 3. Adrian has used two different players at Nos. 1, 2 & 5, while three different players have played at No. 4 and five have played at No. 6. … As a team, Adrian is 31-21 in singles play this season.
• DOUBLING UP: The doubles teams of Elliot/Ellie Himebauch and Earley/Liv Deples share the team lead with four victories each, with Earley/Depies boasting a 4-1 mark — 1-0 at No 1 and 3-1 at No. 2. … Jocelyn Smith/Maddison Wagner have teamed for three wins, with Earley/Bussecher and Hovey/Elliot accounting for the Bulldogs’ other two doubles victories. … Individually, Earley and Elliot lead the team with five doubles wins each, one more than Himebauch and Depies. … As a team, the Bulldogs are 13-13 in 26 doubles matches this season.
KING’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: King’s heads into its four-match spring trip with an 0-1 record — and have yet to play in 2024..
• LAST TIME OUT: The Monarchs dropped all three doubles matches before rebounding to split the six singles matches in a 6-3 loss to SUNY Oneonta on Oct. 15, 2023.
• SINGLED OUT: Hailey D’Amato, Emma Rooney, and Sarah Stettler own King’s three dual-match singles wins this season. … D’Amato also picked up a pair of singles victories at the King’s Fall Invitational and heads into spring break play sitting at 3-0 overall. … D’Amato closed out 2023 with a team-best 10 dual-match singles wins, three more than Ashley Kenia and four up on Rooney.
• DOUBLING UP: The Monarchs came up empty in their three doubles matches against SUNY Oneonta on Oct. 15, with D’Amato/Kenia, Jackie Costello/Carlee Dellose, and Rooney/Stetter King’s doubles pairs against Oneonta. … D’Amato/Kenia accounted for half of King’s dual-match doubles wins a year ago, going 8-8, while Rooney/Peyton Lloyd were second with five dual-match wins.
ALBION SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Britons head to Florida for their spring trip sporting a 2-3 overall record through the first five matches of their 2024 schedule
• LAST TIME OUT: Albion had no answer for Spring Arbor’s offensive firepower, managing to win just 10 games — four in three doubles matches and six in six singles contests — in dropping a 9-0 decision on Feb. 27 in Albion, Mich.
• HITTING THE ROAD: After four consecutive home matches, the Britons will play their next four contests on the road. Following their spring-trip contests against Concordia (Wis.), Saint Mary’s, and California University of Pennsylvania, Albion will head to Kalamazoo College on March 16, before returning home to face Hope College on March 23.
• SINGLED OUT: Kelley Black, Savannah McDonald, and Molly Dunn lead the Britons with two singles wins each, while Rosy Zuun, Josie Dunn, and Abbie Hubbard have all chipped in one victory.
• DOUBLING UP: Jaymee Herrington and Hubbard sit atop the team leaderboard in doubles wins with six each, followed by Josie Dunn and Zuun with four, and McDonald, Black, Molly Dunn, and Karina Nigg with three apiece.
