WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team closed out its grueling weekend the same way they started it — with a win.
Â
Playing their third match in as many days, the Cardinals still have plenty of jump in their step, as Saint Mary's opened quickly and never took its foot off the gas in dealing UW-Superior a 6-3 nonconference setback Sunday at the Winona Tennis Center.
Â
"The ladies beat a tough UW-Superior team today," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg, noting the Cardinals were coming off a 6-3 win over Hamline and a 7-2 loss to St. Scholastica in the previous two days. "It was our third match in three days, but we hung tough and got a great win."
Â
The Cardinals set the tone early, picking up 8-5 and 8-0 doubles wins from
Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.)/
Elena Ruzevich (Chicago, Ill.) and
Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.)/
Emily Dondelinger (Bemidji, Minn.), respectively, to snare a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Â
And Peterson, Dondelinger,
Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.) and
Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.) came through with singles wins – including a 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 win by Dondelinger at No. 3 and a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory by Buerman at No. 6 — to seal the victory.
Â
The Cardinals (9-7 overall) are right back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to St. Paul, Minn., for a 4:30 p.m. conference matchup against Macalester.
