Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Abbie Campion

The Winning Streak Extends

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The Cardinals traveled to Menomonie to take on the first year UW-Stout men's soccer team in a non-conference match up on Wednesday. After trailing two goals, the Cardinals respond in the second half for a come from behind win to stay undefeated.

The Blue Devils were quick to strike early on the Cardinals defense, after a well chipped ball forward and possibly an unlucky bounce in favor of the Blue Devils, put them ahead 1-0 at the 6th minute in the first.

Looking for redemption, the Cardinals got their best look from ball served into the box drawing out the Blue Devil's goalie and a shot from Cohan Hare that was ultimately saved. The Cardinals fell 2-0 after the Blue Devils sent a low crossed ball along the sideline and scoring.

At the 20th in the first, a foul in the box was committed by the Blue Devils allowing Hare to shoot a penalty kick, the shot was saved keeping the two-goal deficit. Another great look for the Cardinals as Francesco Cardone misses high after pushing the ball up off of a turnover at the 30th minute.

Putting the pressure on late in the half, the Cardinals ended the last five minutes of play with a free kick and a corner that ended in a Cardinal goal scored by Caleb Gilbert, the first in his career, off the Hare kick to cut the lead to one at the half.

Head coach John Pucci must have had a motivational talk for his players at the half. The Cardinals were set up for success when Cardone had a free kick into the box that set Hare up for a well hit ball that ties the game at twos within three minutes of the half.

Wanting more, sophomore Zach Newby scored his first career goal for the Cardinals after a slotted ball from the right baseline found his feet. The Cardinals take their first lead of the game, 3-2. No stranger to finding the back of the net, Hare scores his second goal of the half from Cardone taking a two-goal lead within 15 minutes of the half.

The Cardinals did not look back and kept their foot on the gas not allowing a Blue Devil shot in the first 25 minutes of the half.

The Cardinals held the Blue Devils scoreless in the second to win 4-2 on the road. This is the best start to the men's soccer season since the 1980's with a 5-0 start.

The undefeated Cardinals next match is Friday, Sept 13th versus Coe College for a 2pm start.
