WINONA, Minn. – The women's soccer team opened up conference play against Augsburg Saturday afternoon on a beautiful day at the Och. The Cardinals ended the match in a 1-1 tie.
Cardinals struck first after taking earning a corner kick less than a minute into the game and getting two shots at goal before the Auggies had any chances.
The persistent play of the Cardinals rewarded them with a 1-0 lead at the 17
th minute after a well hit ball was played forward to result in a goal from
Samantha Munson from
Lauren Ashe.
The Auggies began to respond as they had their first chance at a shot at the 20
th minute. The defense held strong and only allowed three shots in the first half as the Cardinals held the one goal lead going into half time.
Starting the second half just like the first, the Cardinals had three corner kicks in a row for two attempts at goal from
Lauryn Skoruppa, neither adding to the lead.
The Auggies tied things up ath the 82
nd mark after a ball bounced around in front of the net and an Auggie was able to stick a toe in there to seal the deal.
The goal came too late in the game for either team to try to take the lead ending the game in a tie.
The Cardinals return to the Och Wednesday, Sept. 25
th for a 4 p.m. start against Gustavus.
