Cardinals Fall to the Cobbers on the Road

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Cardinals were on the road to end the week traveling to Moorhead, Minnesota to take on the Cobbers in the Cardinals second conference match of the season. The Cardinals handed the Cobbers their first win of the season in four sets.

The Cardinals did not start the first set on top as they trailed 8-2 to start the game, Grace King and Kali Olson were the two kills on the board. After a few errors on the Cobbers end and a service ace from Kinlee Grattan got the team trailing by one, 11-10. The Cobbers rallied to take a commanding 18-11 lead after a two more kills from Olson and Brenna Bruchert added one, the Cardinals late fight back was not enough as they dropped the first set 25-17.

Looking to get back on track, the Cardinals started the second set up 5-1 with kills from Olson and King. The Cobbers got back into the set off errors before the Cardinals took a timeout to regroup. Gretchen Bredberg, Grattan, and Bruchert all combined for the four-point rally as the Cardinals took a 16-14 lead. Trading points and ultimately going into extra points, the Cobbers snagged two kills to take the 27-25 set.

In a must win set, the Cardinals fell 7-3 without a response to the front line of the Cobbers. Devann Clemens found Bredberg as she added three kills to be within one point, 10-9. Emma Rommes scores an ace and Bruchert adds two kills to tie the game at 18's. In need of the set, the Cardinals closed out set three on a seven-point run from Paige Klug, Grattan, and Bruchert to secure the third set win.

The Cobbers weren't going away as the errors piled up for the Cardinals and the outside hitters for the Cobbers were nailing each kill taking a 13-9 lead over us. Olson, Bruchurt, and Klug tried to get their team back in the game as their contributions led to a one-point deficit, 17-16, but the Cobbers closed out their first win of the season on a run to end the game, 25-21.

Grattan and Clemens combined for 37 assists and Lindsey Rossow recorded 31 digs in the loss. Olson recorded her 500th career kill.

The Cardinals look to host St. Olaf Saturday, Oct, 5th at 4 p.m.
