WINONA, Minn. — For the Cardinals first game under the lights this season, the Saint Mary's women's soccer team (8-2-1, 2-1-1) and Macalester College (3-5-1, 0-3-1) played to a 1-1 draw at Ochrymowycz Field on Wednesday, with each team scoring in the final ten minutes of action.
Lauryn Skoruppa scored the Cardinals lone goal with a penalty kick and led the team with four shots, all on target.
Goalkeeper Anna Peckosh made three saves while allowing one goal in the 90 minutes.
Defensively, the Cardinals held strong, maintaining possession for most of the half, while Peckosh made key saves to keep the Scots at bay and preserve the scoreless tie going into halftime.
The Cardinals came out firing in the second half and maintained offensive pressure, as multiple shot attempts challenged the Scots goalkeeper.
Notably, Skoruppa and Sam Munson had their shots saved early in the half.
In the 81st minute, the Scots broke the deadlock, scoring to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals quickly responded, leveling the score at 1-1 when Skoruppa converted a penalty kick just seconds after the Scots goal.
Despite sustained offensive efforts, including the Cardinals best opportunity when Jossy Saamanen's header off a corner kick was saved, the score remained tied.
The game closed with the score at 1-1, as both teams shared the spoils for the first time each this season.
The Cardinals will look to get back into rhythm in their next matchup at Concordia this Saturday, October 4th, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m.
