NORTHFIELD, Minn. — On a windy afternoon at Bell Field, the Saint Mary's men's soccer team (4-8-3, 1-5-1) fell to Carleton (8-3-3, 2-2-3) 3-0, with the Knights netting two of their three goals in the second half.
Carleton came out early, immediately putting pressure on the Cardinals. After earning a corner kick, the Knights took an early lead in the 3rd minute with a well-placed header that slipped just beyond the reach of Cardinals goalkeeper Ryan Horlock.
Saint Mary's (MN) responded by creating opportunities, including a corner kick at the 19th minute and a shot by Cohan Hare at the 26th minute that just went wide from a great header opportunity and possibly the second best look of the game.
Despite several attempts to level the score, the team entered halftime trailing 1-0, with Horlock making multiple saves to keep the deficit at a single goal.
The second half began with Carleton quickly shifting momentum in their favor. Jonathan Vonderlage scored twice in quick succession, pushing Carleton's lead to 3-0.Â
In the 71st minute, the Cardinals had their best chance of the match, but it was denied by the Knights' goalkeeper, who saved a penalty kick attempt by Dylan Goedderz.
The Cardinals attempted to respond with offensive pushes, including shots from Goedderz and Hare, but they were unable to find the back of the net.Â
Horlock recorded six saves, with four in the first half and two in the second, facing 20 shots on target. Hare contributed offensively with three shots, one of which was on goal.Â
The Cardinals now turn their focus to the final three games of the season, aiming to finish strong. Up next is a matchup against St. Scholastica on Saturday, October 25, with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
