LAKE FOREST, Ill. — In the final game before Thanksgiving break, the Saint Mary's men's basketball team (0-6) came out firing, but a huge second half leap from Lake Forest (3-3) swung the momentum as the Cardinals fell 89–79 at the Sports & Recreation Center.
Saint Mary's set the tone early as Reid Weckwerth started the hot shooting with a three before Reid Klug, who picked up right where he left off from his previous career night, hit three quick threes to get the Cardinals rolling 20-16 at 12:33. Weckwerth added another three plus a strong finish at the rim as he marched toward a career-high 27 points.
Lake Forest managed to tie things at 25–25, but Saint Mary's answered right back, and a smooth jumper from Jackson Harvey late in the half sent the Cardinals into the locker room up four with a 42–38 lead at halftime.
The Cardinals extended their edge early in the second half as Klug converted a layup and a free throw, and Weckwerth drilled another three to make it 52–45. But the tide shifted as turnovers began to stack up with the added Foresters pressure.
Lake Forest cashed in on nearly every mistake, scoring 28 points off 16 Cardinal giveaways and using that swing to take control.
Despite hitting 10 threes and scoring 20 points in the paint, Saint Mary's couldn't slow the Foresters 51-point second-half push.
Weckwerth paced the Cardinals with his career-best 27 points on a sharp 6-for-7 effort from beyond the arc, adding five free throws. Klug followed with 23 points, another career best, and six rebounds, while Harvey turned in a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double.
The Cardinals will look to rebound Saturday, Nov. 29, at 1:00 p.m. for a tip off at Marian.
