NORTHFIELD, Minn. - On Wednesday night, the Saint Mary's men's basketball team (6-19) fell to St. Olaf (4-20) 77-74 in a buzzer-beating loss during their final road game of the season.
Khai Branham led the Cardinals with a career high 26 points, shooting 12-for-15 from the field with four rebounds.
Jemari Moore contributed significantly on defense with two steals while scoring six points and collecting four rebounds.
Bailey McDonald also recorded two steals, contributing 11 points while shooting 4-for-9 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Jabari Sawyer was notable for his shooting, going 6-for-11 and scoring 13 points, alongside three assists.
Breyton Buysman led the team in rebounding with six total boards and added eight points and two assists.
Saint Mary's started the first half strong with a quick jumper by Sawyer at 19:15, followed by a layup from Branham at 18:45, giving them an early 4-0 lead.Â
Moore then contributed to Saint Mary's 10-6 advantage with a jumper at 15:13, but the team's momentum was highlighted by
Jonah Ogunsanya's consecutive three-pointers at 6:14 and 5:41, extending their lead to 31-17.Â
Saint Mary's continued to control the pace, closing the half with Branham's three-pointer at 00:05, finishing the first half ahead 40-27.
Saint Mary's started the second half with a layup from Branham at 19:42, extending their lead. Consecutive turnovers and successful free throws by the Oles allowed them to gradually close the gap, causing the Cardinals' 16-point lead to slip away with ten minutes remaining.
Throughout the half, Branham led Saint Mary's scoring efforts with multiple layups, while St. Olaf also contributed significantly with crucial free throws and a layup, which tied the game at 67-67 with 1:54 remaining.Â
In a dramatic final minute, the Oles hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 74-74 with 21 seconds remaining. A missed opportunity on the Cardinals end allowed the Oles to set up an inbound buzzer-beating play and a three-pointer secured a 77-74 victory for St. Olaf.Â
The Cardinals would get swept by the Oles in the final road game of the season.
The team has one last game to play at home hosting Macalester for Senior Day on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
