Basball Strikes Early, Down Hawks In Game Two

WINTER HAVEN, Florida - The Saint Mary's baseball team (2-5) secured another split after a doubleheader on Friday evening against Roger Williams (1-1) in Florida, marking their second-to-last day of the trip. The Cardinals lost the first matchup 7-1 but made a strong comeback, winning the second game 11-4 in dominant fashion.
 
Game One
 
Despite outhitting Roger Williams 5-7, the Cardinals were unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position, leaving seven men on base. 
 
On the mound, Eric Charest provided stability in relief, pitching three scoreless innings without allowing a hit, striking out four. 
 
The Cardinals faced the Hawks in a closely contested game. In the first inning, Roger Williams took an early 1-0 lead and the Cardinals had a chance to respond when Alex Hanneman reached second base on a throwing error and Brinton Anderson walked, but they were unable to capitalize, leaving two runners on base.
 
In the fourth inning, the Cardinals showed potential offensive momentum. Golden singled up the middle, and after a pinch runner was brought in, Noah Lahner followed with another single, advancing the runner to third. However, the inning concluded with no runs scored as the final out was recorded with two runners left on base.
 
The sixth inning the Cardinals managed to tie the game at 1-1 after Anderson reached base on a throwing error and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jack Anderson reached on another error by the third baseman, allowing Anderson to score an unearned run, leveling the score.
 
The game remained tied until the ninth inning, when Roger Williams broke it open with a six-run burst. They scored six runs on four hits, taking advantage of a wild pitch and a passed ball, to secure a 7-1 victory. 
 
Game Two
 
The Cardinals took an early lead with five runs in the first inning, adding four more in the second and two in the third, while the Hawks scored one run in the first and three in the fourth. 
 
Riley Bauman stood out as a key player for the Cardinals, recording a team-high OPS of 1.417. In his performance, Bauman contributed two hits and two RBIs, along with two runs scored and a stolen base. Daniel Sherman also made a significant impact, achieving an OPS of 1.167 with two RBIs and one hit, which included a double.
 
Saint Mary's started strong in the first inning, capitalizing on Roger Williams' defensive errors to score five unearned runs. Lahner began the inning by getting hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Anderson. Bauman and Sherman contributed with RBI singles, driving in additional runs for a 5-1 lead after the first inning.
 
In the second inning, the Cardinals continued their offensive momentum, adding four more runs to their lead. Sam Knickerbocker scored on a sacrifice fly from Hanneman and Sherman followed with an RBI double. 
 
Ryan Csida and Josh Costello each added RBI singles, extending the score to 9-1.
 
The score increased to 11-1 after the third inning as Golden and Knickerbocker crossed home plate. Despite a quiet fourth inning for the Cardinals, Roger Williams managed to respond with three runs, making it 11-4.
 
The remainder of the game was scoreless for both sides. The Cardinals maintained their defensive composure, allowing no further scoring from the Hawks. 
 
The Cardinals will conclude their final day of games in Florida tomorrow, facing off against UW-Oshkosh at 1:30 p.m. EST.
