Cardinals Battle Wind, Splits Series with Saints

DULUTH, MInn. - The Saint Mary's baseball team (16-13) continued their road stretch with a visit to St. Scholastica, where they ended up splitting their conference series against the Saints (11-14)—dropping the first game 4-1 before bouncing back with a 9-3 win in game two on a windy Tuesday.

GAME ONE

The Cardinals began the game with a run in the first inning after a big two out surge started by Brinton Anderson as he tripled and scored on an error by St. Scholastica's shortstop, giving the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead.

St. Scholastica managed to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first but was held scoreless after a double play ended the inning, leaving Saint Mary's ahead 1-0 after a promising first inning.

In the fifth inning, the Saints capitalized on their offensive opportunities, scoring four runs on four hits to lead 4-1 after the inning.

Despite a promising first inning, the Cardinals were held scoreless for the remainder of the game recording just two hits to fall in game one.

GAME TWO

The second game told a different story.

Riley Bauman excelled for the Cardinals, leading the hitters with three hits, two runs, and two RBI's.

On the mound, Drew Rothenber pitched five innings, allowing only two earned runs on two hits, and struck out two recording his second win of the season.

The Cardinals opened up the scoring in the third inning with a strategic use of a wild pitch and a timely single. Ryan Csida scored the first run, followed by Stephen Golden's RBI single that brought Alex Hanneman home, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Saint Mary's added to their lead as Golden doubled and later scored on Bauman's triple. Reese Berg's double then plated Bauman, increasing the advantage to 4-0.

St. Scholastica responded in the bottom half of the fifth with a two-run homer narrowing the score to 4-2.

The Cardinals extended their lead in the sixth inning with a pair of runs making it 6-2.

In the ninth inning, the Cardinals solidified their win with three additional runs after a sequence of hits, including doubles from Anderson, Berg, and a sacrifice fly by Daniel Sherman, contributed to the final score.

The Cardinals wrapped up the game with a 9-3 win, racking up 15 hits and backing it up with strong defense from start to finish.

The team will finally return home this Saturday, April 19th, as they host Carleton College in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m., part of the 100 Years of Baseball celebration.
