WINONA, Minn. - It was a memorable day of celebration for the Saint Mary's baseball team (18-13). Not only did the Cardinals complete a conference sweep over the Carleton Knights (8-14), but they did it in front of a spirited crowd of over 75 baseball alumni — all in honor of 100 years of Saint Mary's baseball history.
They pulled it all off while sporting their sharp new baby blue uniforms!
GAME ONE
Connor Tulley delivered a standout performance on the mound for the Cardinals, completing a full game with seven innings pitched. He allowed just two hits and one earned run, striking out three batters and walking two.Â
In the bottom of the third, the Cardinals offense ignited with
Daniel Sherman starting the rally with a single. Consecutive hits from
Josh Costello,
Ryan Csida, and
Alex Hanneman drove in runs, with the Cardinals scoring three runs on five hits to take a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Cardinals added another run.
Gavan Schulte reached second base on a single and a fielding error, followed by an RBI single from Sherman to extend the lead to 4-0.
Carleton managed to get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning but the Cardinals defense held strong, preventing any further scoring leading to the Cardinals 4-1 victory.
GAME TWO
Riley Bauman led the Cardinals with an impressive performance, tallying three hits, including a home run and a double, while driving in three runs and scoring two.Â
On the mound,
Eric Stomberg pitched seven innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out two.
Carleton took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.Â
In the fourth inning, the Cardinals responded after
Riley Bauman's two-run homer brought
Stephen Golden home, giving the Cardinals their first lead of the game, 2-1.
Carleton managed to tie the game in the fourth inning. However, Saint Mary's reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning as Csida homered, putting the home team ahead 3-2.
In the eighth inning, the Cardinals broke the game open with a four-run surge.Â
Mason Coyle got the inning started after scoring on a wild pitch, followed by an RBI double from Bauman, bringing Golden home. Sherman and
Reese Berg each contributed RBI doubles, further extending the lead to 7-2.
Saint Mary's defense held strong in the later innings, preventing Carleton from scoring again.Â
The Cardinals wrapped up the game with a commanding 7-2 win, thanks to a strong showing both offensively and defensively.
The Cardinals return to action at home on Wednesday, April 23, as they host Saint John's for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
