WINONA, Minn. – Saint Mary's University of Minnesota has announced the official resignation of Head Men's Basketball Coach Joe Fano, who departs after seven seasons at the helm of the Cardinals program to pursue a professional opportunity outside the realm of collegiate coaching.

Since taking the helm in 2018, Fano has been a dedicated leader and mentor, guiding the team through competitive seasons in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) with record breaking victories, making the playoffs in three of his seven seasons, and hosting their first program playoff game.

"We wish Joe the best in the next step of his career," said Saint Mary's Athletic Director Brian Sisson. "He elevated our program to a level not seen before and we thank him for his time and dedication to the program and our student-athletes and the many great memories made for many."

Under Fano's leadership, the Cardinals achieved several key milestones, including the teams first postseason appearance in 35 years and clinching their first postseason victory in program history in 2019-2020. They enjoyed their best season in more than 50 years in 2022-23, finishing 16-10 overall — the most wins since the 1977-78 team.

Fano coached an All-American during the 2022-23 season with over 10 players earning All MIAC honors during his time.

"To all my current and former players as well as alumni, thank you! You are the reason I do what I do, and I will forever cherish the relationships and memories that were made here at Saint Mary's," said Fano. "I am grateful for all the time and hard work that you have put in. You are the reason why Saint Mary's Men's Basketball is in a better place."

Saint Mary's University will begin a national search for its next head men's basketball coach immediately.
