WINONA, Minn. — On Senior Day inside David R. Thies Arena, the Saint Mary's men's basketball team (1-22, 0-14 MIAC) battled until the final horn but fell to St. Scholastica (7-18, 3-11 MIAC), 92-77, in conference action.
While the scoreboard didn't tilt the Cardinals' way, the night carried special meaning, especially for senior Khai Branham, who surpassed 500 career points in front of the home crowd.
Saint Mary's shot the ball well from deep, knocking down 13-of-30 from beyond the arc, but St. Scholastica countered with 14 three-pointers of its own and 42 points in the paint to secure the win. The Cardinals forced 13 turnovers and tallied nine steals, yet couldn't overcome the Saints' balanced scoring and rebounding edge.
Sawyer Markham led the charge with 17 points, six assists, and three steals, setting the tone offensively. Branham added 13 points and six rebounds in his milestone performance, while Reid Weckwerth matched him with 13 points, including three triples. Reid Klug stuffed the stat sheet with five assists and four steals.
The Cardinals came out firing, grabbing an early lead on a Markham three just seconds in and riding back-to-back triples from Weckwerth midway through the first half to stay in front. The teams traded punches early, but the Saints found rhythm late in the half, using a string of three-pointers to build a 47-37 advantage at the break.
Saint Mary's refused to back down in the second half. John Palmer opened the period with an aggressive take to the rim, and Klug sparked the defense with a quick steal on the next possession. Branham later drained a three to keep the Cardinals within striking distance, but the Saints continued to attack inside and convert on key possessions down the stretch.
The team will have one final game left at home on Wednesday, Feb. 18 for a 7:00 p.m. game time against Hamline.
