WINONA, Minn. - It was a beautiful day for baseball and the Saint Mary's Cardinals (12-11) were back in action off of a short turnaround as they took on the Macalester Scots (6-11) for their third conference series of the season.
The Cardinals split their two-game series against the Scots, losing game one 2-7 and securing a 4-3 victory in game two with a walk-off down the left side.
GAME ONE
On the mound in game one for Saint Mary's was junior pitcher
Eric Charest. Contributing four innings to the defensive effort, Charest gave up nine hits while striking out two and without giving up a walk.
The Scots were able to notch their first runs of the game in the third inning, tacking four runs on the Cardinal defense, and adding two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, making the score 6-0.
The Cardinals were able to respond in the bottom of the fourth inning with RBI singles by infielders
Stephen Golden and
Josh Costello.
These two runs would go on to be the only runs of the game for Saint Mary's.
GAME TWO
After a tough loss in game one, the Cardinals were eager to add a notch to the win column. Even with Macalester's early offense, scoring three runs through the first five innings of play, the Cardinals were stoic and held on throughout all nine innings to secure the victory.
The Cardinal offense was slow to start, but broke the seal in the fourth inning, scoring sophomore
Devin Coyle on an RBI single from junior
Noah Lahner.
Later on in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Will Boeckman drew a walk with the bases loaded to score
Gavan Schulte. Sophomore
Ryan Csida scored on a sacrifice fly ball off the bat of senior
Brinton Anderson, making the score 3-3.
The bottom of the ninth inning was nothing short of fireworks, with Costello reaching base on a single to right field, then advancing to second on a ball in the dirt.
From there, Boeckman stepped up to the plate with a chance to win the game. All tied 3-3, Boeckman hit a double down the left field line, scoring Costello, and clinching game two for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday, April 9th in Minneapolis as they take on Augsburg in a conference doubleheader.
