MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Saint Mary's Cardinals are in the middle of their conference schedule and today traveled to take on Augsburg for a doubleheader at Parade Stadium. It was a full day of baseball for the Cardinals, losing the first game 2-7 and capturing a big come from behind win in the second game 12-7.
GAME ONE
A familiar face in the Cardinals rotation took the ball today as
Addison Hochevar geared up to make his seventh start of the season. The big left-hander ended up going 2.2 innings before exiting early after five strikeouts, leaving
Tyson Allen-Woodcock to pitch the remainder of the game.
Will Boeckman made a significant impact for the Cardinals with a strong offensive performance, contributing a home run and two RBIs in game one.
It started off hot for the Cardinals.
In the top of the first inning, Boeckman launched a two-run homerun over the wall in left-center field, scoring
Josh Costello and making it an early 2-0 game. This home run proved to be the only source of offense for the Cardinals for the rest of the first game.
The Auggies were able to put up seven runs across seven innings, defeating the Cardinals by a score of 2-7.
GAME TWO
In yet another hot start, Boeckman added yet another RBI to his daily total, driving in outfielder
Ryan Csida to score the first run of the game. Later in that inning,
Riley Bauman put a charge into a ball to deep left-center, going over the wall for a two-run homerun. By the end of the first frame, the Cardinals were up 3-0.
After the crooked number in the first, the Auggies managed to hold the Cardinals scoreless until the seventh inning and put up seven runs of their own.
Saint Mary's had a seventh inning to remember, putting up seven runs to blow the game wide open.
It all started with a hard hit ball to the shortstop by Costello, forcing an error and scoring two runs. From there, RBI's from
Sam Knickerbocker,
Brinton Anderson, and
Daniel Sherman resulted in a seven run answer from the Cardinals, and a lead that would not be overcome the rest of the game.
The Cardinals were able to tag on two more runs in the ninth inning off of sacrifice fly balls from Sherman and
Gavan Schulte. At the end of nine innings, Saint Mary's won by a score of 12-7.
Alex Amin picks up his first win of the season on the mound.
The team returns to action in Saint Paul on Saturday, April 11th, facing off against the Pipers of Hamline University. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
