WINONA, Minn. - The No. 25 Saint Mary's softball team (19-3) remains undefeated at home, having yet to allow a run! On Sunday, the Cardinals defeated the Carleton Knights (7-12) 4-0 and 5-0, completing another conference sweep.
GAME ONE
Makayla Steffes delivered another impressive performance, throwing a complete-game shutout and securing the win while giving up just three hits over seven innings.
Her pitching efficiency was supported by five strikeouts and just one walk.Â
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second inning as
Alexandra Gerber singled and later scored on
Emily Bonk's RBI single through the left side.
Ariel Herrera, pinch running for Bonk, also contributed by scoring on Steffes' single, bringing the score to 2-0.
In the third inning, the Cardinals increased the lead to 3-0.
During the fifth inning,
Megan McGinnis singled and advanced on a series of steals and a fielding error, scoring an unearned run.
Heather Nordlund's single and a throwing error further pressured Carleton, but the Cardinals were held to one run, leading 4-0 after the fifth.
Carleton was unable to score throughout the game, with the Cardinals defense holding strong.Â
GAME TWO
The Cardinals pitchers were unstoppable as
Kenzie Gatz stood out on the mound for the Cardinals, pitching a complete game shutout. She allowed only three hits over seven innings, striking out two and walking none, yes none.
Saint Mary's opened the scoring in the first inning with Steffes walking and successfully stealing second base. McGinnis executed a sacrifice, advancing Steffes to third, who then scored on a single by
Peyton Berg, putting the Cardinals ahead 1–0.
Bork hit a solo home run to right center, extending the lead to 2–0, in the fourth inning.
A strong 5th inning for the Cardinals started with a double by
Abbie Stigler, who advanced to third on a flyout. McGinnis drove in Stigler with a single, increasing the score to 3–0. Berg followed with a single, and after a pitching change,
Zoe Fink tripled down the right field line, scoring both McGinnis and pinch runner Leis. This three-run inning pushed the lead to 5–0.
The Cardinals kept proving why they're among the best teams in the nation! They will turn around and return to action this Tuesday, April 8th, with a conference doubleheader at Gustavus at 3:30 p.m.
