WINONA, Minn. - We had ourselves a tight knit matchup tonight at the Oak. The Saint Mary's men's soccer team (1-3-1) hosted Simpson College (2-2-3) and played to a 2-2 draw.
The first half was marked by a defensive struggle, with both teams unable to convert their opportunities into goals.Â
Ivan Ruiz was the first true test with a shot at the third minute with a ball placed just over the net to strike first. Bode Jacobsen, the goalkeeper for Saint Mary's, was then tested early with a save in the 11th minute.Â
The half concluded scoreless as both defenses held firm.
Finally, Dylan Goedderz, put Saint Mary's on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 64th minute from the top of the box for his first goal as a Cardinal, it was assisted by Cohan Hare.Â
Simpson responded quickly, scoring in the 70th minute to level the game.
Simpson took the lead in the 77th minute, putting the Cardinals in a sticky situation, but were never counted out.Â
With just seconds remaining, Hare netted the equalizer, with help from Caleb Gilbert, resulting in a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation.
Despite being outshot 13-11, the Cardinals managed to hold Simpson to a stalemate.
The Cardinals home stand continues into this Saturday, September 13th for a 4:00 p.m. game hosting Coe for a special senior day.Â
