Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cardinals Blank Wartburg, Improve to 5-0

WINONA, Minn. — For the first time since the 2021 season, the Saint Mary's women's soccer team is starting the season 5-0. The Cardinals defeated Wartburg College 3-0 on Wednesday evening at the beautiful Ochrymowycz Field.

The Cardinals opened the scoring in the first half and added two more goals after the break. The Cardinals defense held Wartburg to just five shots, and Anna Peckosh, the goalkeepers, recorded a shutout with just two saves.

Saint Mary's started the first half assertively, with Malerie Williams taking an early shot on goal in the third minute. None other than Lauryn Skoruppa, who is averaging almost two goals a game, broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, scoring with an assist from a breakaway by Lauren Ashe to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals continued to apply pressure, with Skoruppa attempting another shot in the 15th minute and Hannah Bradley testing the Knights again in the 29th minute. Wartburg's attempts to equalize were always shut down by goalkeeper Peckosh, who goes on to record her third shutout of the season.

After the half, the Cardinals were back in the driver's seat when Skoruppa opened the scoring in the 66th minute, assisted by Bradley, making it 2-0. Wartburg's goalkeeper received a yellow card leading to the free kick in the box. Samantha Munson extended the lead to 3-0 in the 80th minute with a goal assisted by Ashe, while Wartburg struggled to convert their opportunities, including a saved shot by Peckosh in the 88th minute.

The Cardinals are excited to keep it rolling and will take the weekend off before starting conference play next Tuesday, September 16th, at 4:00 p.m. at Bethel.
