WINONA, Minn. - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team (1-0) opened their season in dominant fashion with a 7-0 sweep over Bethany Lutheran College (0-1) on Saturday at the Winona Tennis Center.
From start to finish, the Cardinals showed poise, power, and depth across both doubles and singles play.
In doubles, Saint Mary's took control early by winning all three matches to secure the opening point.
The top duo of Emily Dondelinger and Olivia Molumby battled to a 6-3 win, while Maddie Jensen and Harsha Gangasani were solid at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-2.
In the third spot, Kathryn Stiegel and Sophia Binder picked up easy wins, winning their matchups by default.
This momentum carried through the rest of the day.
In singles play, Dondelinger led the way at No. 1 with an exciting tie-breaker win over 7-6, 6-0. Aheli Patel followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on court two for her first win as a Cardinal, and Taylor DePover held steady at No. 3, closing out a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Stiegel earned a hard-fought tie-breaker 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 4, while Gangasani and Sophia Binder wrapped up the match for Saint Mary's with wins by default.
The shutout win puts Saint Mary's at 1-0 to start the season, setting a confident tone for the matches ahead.
The Cardinals will take a break and will return to the court in January hosting Martin Luther at 1:30 p.m.
