WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. — The Saint Mary's men's tennis (3-5) team battled hard on Saturday but fell in a 7-0 loss to the University of Northwestern (MN) (2-3).
The Eagles claimed all three doubles points to take early control of the match. At No. 1 doubles, Gavin Pratt and Michael Johnson fell 6-4 in a competitive battle, while Zak Farley and Kanyon Hicks dropped a 6-2 decision at No. 2. At No. 3, Paul Havemeier and Owen Fonder were edged 6-4 as Northwestern secured the opening sweep.
In singles play, Northwestern continued its momentum. Pratt faced a tough challenge at No. 1 singles, falling 6-1, 6-2, while Farley dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match at No. 2. Johnson battled at No. 3, pushing the second set but ultimately falling 6-3, 7-5. Havemeier (No. 4) and Hicks (No. 5) were both defeated in their sets, and Fonder fought through a tight opening set at No. 6 before falling in the tiebreak 7-6(3), 7-5.
Despite the final score, the Cardinals showed resilience throughout the lineup, highlighted by Johnson's strong second-set push and Fonder's tightly contested first-set tiebreak.
Saint Mary's will look to regroup and bounce back in Winona hosting Crown College for a 6:00 p.m. matchup on Friday, Feb. 20.
