WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's men's tennis team (4-5) delivered a strong performance on its home courts Friday night, defeating Crown College (2-3), 5-2, at the Winona Tennis Center.
The Cardinals set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. At No. 1 doubles, Gavin Pratt and Michael Johnson teamed up for a decisive 6-4 victory. The No. 2 duo of Zak Farley and Kanyon Hicks followed with a 6-4 win of their own, while Paul Havemeier and Owen Fonder sealed the sweep at No. 3 with a commanding 6-2 performance.
Carrying that momentum into singles, Saint Mary's secured the match with wins at four of six positions. Pratt battled to a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles, while Johnson was dominant at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set win. Hicks controlled his No. 5 match from start to finish, earning a 6-0, 6-3 triumph.
Fonder capped the night with an impressive comeback at No. 6 singles, rallying for a 7-6, 6-4 victory to help lock in the 5-2 team result.
With the win, the Cardinals protected their home court and will look to host Bethel on Friday, Feb. 27 for a 5:00 p.m. matchup.
