MADISON, Wis. – The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Edgewood University Saturday afternoon at the Powness Tennis Center.
Despite the final score, the Cardinals were competitive throughout the lineup, highlighted by a pair of tightly contested matches at the top of singles play.
At No. 1 singles, Gavin Pratt battled Ryder Broadbridge in a three-set thriller. After falling 6-3 in the opening set, Pratt responded with a 7-5 second-set win to force a super tiebreak, where he ultimately came up short 10-2. Zak Farley matched that intensity at No. 2 singles, opening with a 6-4 win before dropping a 7-5 second set and falling in a 10-7 super tiebreak.
Michael Johnson (No. 3), Paul Havemeier (No. 4), Kanyon Hicks (No. 5), and Owen Fonder (No. 6) rounded out singles play for Saint Mary's but were unable to secure points against a deep Edgewood lineup.
In doubles action, Pratt and Johnson pushed the No. 1 match to the limit before falling 8-6. Farley and Hicks dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 2, while Havemeier and Fonder were defeated 6-2 in the No. 3 spot.
Saint Mary's will look to regroup as it continues its early-season schedule in the coming week.
