RIPON, Wis. — The Saint Mary's men's tennis (3-4) team put together a perfect day in Ripon on Sunday, earning a pair of road victories with a 6–1 win over Wisconsin Lutheran (0-5) and a thrilling 4–3 comeback victory over Ripon College (2-5) at the Willmore Center.
In the opener against Wisconsin Lutheran, the Cardinals took control early and never let up. After securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, Saint Mary's carried that momentum into singles, capturing five of six matches.
Gavin Pratt took home a close No.1 singles win after pushing to a tiebreak in the opening set to win 7-5, 6-0 and Zak Farley delivered a dominant performance at No. 2 singles with a 6–4, 6–2 victory, while Paul Havemeier continued the surge with a strong 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4. Owen Fonder closed out his match at No. 6 with a convincing 6–2, 6–0 decision. The depth of the lineup proved to be the difference as the Cardinals rolled to the 6–1 team win.
Later in the afternoon, Saint Mary's showed its resilience in a tight battle with Ripon, rallying for a 4–3 victory after falling behind early. The Cardinals dropped two of three doubles matches but stormed back in singles play, winning four courts to complete the comeback.
Zak Farley again set the tone with a composed 6–0, 6–1 win at No. 2 singles, while Paul Havemeier delivered a clutch 6–4, 6–4 victory at No. 4. Kanyon Hicks earned another key point with a 6–4, 6–0 win at No. 5, and Owen Fonder sealed the dramatic comeback at No. 6 with a 6–1, 6–3 performance.
With momentum building, Saint Mary's leaves Ripon 2-0 before gearing up to travel to Minneapolis on Saturday, Feb. 14 taking on Northwestern (MN) at 12:30 p.m.
