Game Recap: Baseball |

Csida’s Power Lift Cardinals to Split

WINONA, Minn. — Battling cold conditions in a rescheduled matchup, the Saint Mary's baseball team (19-12, 7-5 MIAC) earned a split with St. Scholastica (22-19, 9-12 MIAC) in a pair of contrasting games Sunday afternoon at Max Molock Field.

GAME ONE
SMU 3, ST. SCHOLASTICA 6

The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead but couldn't sustain the momentum, as the Saints used the long ball to pull away for the win.

Saint Mary's struck first with three runs in the opening inning. Ryan Csida and Joe Anderson each drew walks to set the table before Sam Knickerbocker added an RBI walk. Alex Hanneman followed with a two-run single to center, giving the Cardinals a quick 3-0 advantage.

The Saints responded with three home runs over the course of the game to even the score and eventually take control. They added an insurance run in the seventh inning on an RBI single, extending the lead to 6-3.

Despite putting runners on base in multiple innings, the Cardinals were unable to break through again. Gavin Schulte led the offense with a three-for-four performance and scored once, while Hanneman drove in two runs.

GAME TWO
SMU 6, ST. SCHOLASTICA 3

Saint Mary's responded in game two with a complete effort, using a fast start and steady pitching to secure the split.

The Cardinals wasted no time taking control, scoring three runs in the first inning. Josh Costello ignited the rally with a double, followed by an RBI single from Schulte. Reese Berg added another RBI knock, and Stephen Golden later crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Csida added a solo home run in the third to extend the lead.

While the Saints chipped away with a pair of solo home runs, the Cardinals' pitching staff kept them in check. Kasey Carlson earned the win, pitching six innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out four.

The bullpen combined to close it out, highlighted by Connor Olson, who recorded the final three outs to earn the save. The Cardinals' defense sealed the victory with a key double play in the ninth inning.

Saint Mary's returns to action Tuesday, April 21, traveling to Concordia Moorhead for a conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
