WINONA, Minn. – The Saint Mary's women's soccer team(1-1-1) hosted their home opener Saturday afternoon, welcoming the Wartburg Knights (1-2-1) in for a challenge. The Cardinals were unable to capitalize on their 10 total shot attempts as the Knights earned their first win of the season, 1-0.
The Knights came out with energy in the first frame as they took the opening three shots, setting the tone. At the 36-minute mark, the Knights were able to take the lead off a bouncing corner kick attempt.
The Cardinals were unable to answer.
The forwards, Kaylen Pray, Caleia Heier, and Lydia Hawkins, each had the team's best looks on net, but the Wartburg defense prevailed.Â
Hannah Bradley had the best look of the match. At the 59-minute mark, she took a free kick that drilled the top of the crossbar; the Cardinals were stunned in their home opener.Â
Kelsy Siercks made three saves in her outing.
Looking Ahead
The team will be right back at Ochryamowycz Field tomorrow, Sept. 13, at 1:00 p.m., hosting Millikin College to cap off the home weekend stand.Â
