WINONA, Minn. – Closing out the home stand, the Saint Mary's women's soccer team (1-2-1) finished the weekend facing Millikin (3-2-0) on Sunday afternoon. The big Blue pressure was too much as the Cardinals dropped the match 2-1.
The Cardinals were looking for a comeback after falling to Wartburg on Saturday.
It was Millikin who got on the board first with a breakaway at the 31st minute. The Cardinals trailed heading into halftime.
Energy was on the side of the Cardinals to start the second half.
It was Ayshia Gay Gay, from Lauren Fields, who tied the game early in the half. It felt as though the Cardinals swung the momentum as the team celebrated Gay's first collegiate goal as a Cardinal.Â
It wasn't until a dagger with just over five minutes remaining in the game that the big Blue jumped back ahead to close out the game.Â
The Cardinals had five crucial corner kick attempts, but were unable to convert.
In goal, Payton Bremer recorded a career-high nine saves.
The Cardinals closed out their nonconference action 1-2-1.
Looking Ahead
The Cardinals are set to open conference action this Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Augsburg for a game under the lights. The Cardinals will face the Auggies at 7:30 p.m. for the conference opener.Â
