MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Saint Mary's women's soccer team (1-3-1) drops a heartbreaker in a conference opener on Wednesday night, 3-2. The Cardinals traveled to Augsburg (1-3-1) to face the Auggies with some rain, but a goal in the final minute killed the Cardinals' chances for extra time.
The Cardinals found themselves down early in the game as the Auggies scored just minutes into the game. It took until the opening minutes of the second half before the Cardinals responded.Â
Lydia Hawkins netted her first career goal just 30 seconds into the second half from a perfect feed from Makayla Clow and Hannah Bradley to even the match 1-1.
Right when the teams were eyeing extra time, the Auggies scored what felt like the game-winner at the time with six minutes remaining. With one last effort, a goal by Hannah Beix set the Cardinals in an uproar of emotions, assisted by Ana Beckman and Kaylen Pray with a minute and a half remaining in the game.
The Cardinals could not hold onto the 2-2 tie long enough as a misplaced ball landed the Auggies the final blow at 88:49, and the Cardinals would fall to the Auggies 3-2.
The Cardinals had their chances with nine shots on goal, the most this season, but could not finish the match.

The Cardinals will hit the road this Saturday, Sept. 19, for a game against St. Olaf at 1:00 p.m.
