ST. PAUL, Minn. — For the second day in a row, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team gave nationally ranked Hamline everything it could handle Saturday afternoon.

And one thing the Pipers couldn't handle was the play of SMU sophomore Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.), who recorded the first four-goal game of his career.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Glaesmer's best just wasn't good enough, as the Pipers got a goal from Brian Arrigoni 1:21 into overtime, as Hamline escaped with a 7-6 overtime victory to complete a sweep of the teams' two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series.

“We played very well — probably our best all-around effort of the season,” said SMU coach Bill Moore. “When you look at the weekend, when you take away eight minutes of undisciplined play on Friday night, we gave Hamline — ranked nationally and the defending MIAC (regular-season) champions — everything they could handle.

“The only downside is that, despite how well we played, the end result was still a pair of losses.”

The Pipers had the upper hand early on, scoring four times, while SMU could only answer with back-to-back goals from Glaesmer, as the Cardinals found themselves staring at a 4-2 deficit following the opening 20 minutes of play.

Tony Clafton (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Andy Roberts (Rochester, Minn.) pulled SMU even with goals in the opening five minutes of the second period, only to have Arrigoni and Glaesmer each score before the period ended, as the teams headed into the third period deadlocked at 5-5.

Glaesmer recorded his fourth goal 17 seconds into the third period, but Hamline again had an answer, as Ryan Kupperman netted his fourth of the season just 1:05 into the third period to knot the game at 6-6.

And set up Arrigoni's overtime heroics.

“It's a tough way to lose — we really played well, and to have it end in overtime like that, it's tough,” said Moore, who not only got four goals from Glaesmer, but also got three assists from both #A.J. Woodward# (Lenexa, Kan.) and Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.). 'There are so many positives in this game — and in the weekend in general. It's too bad we weren't able to get at least two points for our efforts, but I think we made some great strides this weekend.

“Hopefully, once we come back from the (Christmas) break, we'll be able to pick up right where we left off.”
