MENOMONIE, Wis. — For most coaches, a rematch against a team that put up a 12-spot against you just six days earlier isn't exactly high on the priority list.

Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach Bill Moore, however, couldn't wait for another shot at UW-Stout.

His team wanted a bit of redemption.

What they got was another dose of the Blue Devils' high-octane offense.

UW-Stout may not have scored 10 unanswered goals in the first two periods — like they did last Tuesday when they cruised to a 12-2 victory over SMU — but the Blue Devils certainly flexed their muscles again, scoring twice in the first period and three more in the second en route to a 6-1 nonconference victory.

“I was a little disappointed with the effort, we just seemed to revert to our old ways of not working very hard — and that surprised me a bit, especially after the way we played Saturday,” said Moore, referring to the Cardinals' thrilling, come-from-behind 2-1 win over UW-River Falls in which SMU scored the game-tying goal with 1:55 left in regulation, then got the game-winner with 0.4 seconds remaining in overtime. “It's tough to play five games in nine days, but that's the way the schedule worked out — we've got to be ready to come out and play at the top of our game every time out, and we didn't do that tonight.”

Matt Morin and Joel Gaulrapp gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 first-period lead, while Hanson sandwhiched a pair of goals around a tally by Jack Wolgemuth, as UW-Stout pushed that advantage to 5-0 heading into the final period, where SMU's Tommy Healy (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) and UW-Stout's Paul Henderson traded goals.

Scott Pederson (Lake Villa, Ill.) finished with 39 saves in goal for SMU, while UW-Stout's Matt Koenig stopped all 17 shots he faced in two periods of work, while Jesse Pischlar stopped seven of the Cardinals' eight third-period shots.

SMU, which falls to 2-12-1 overall, returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend, traveling to Northfield, Minn., for the first of two conference games against St. Olaf.
