ST. PAUL, Minn. — It was the start of the second season, and Saint Mary's University men's basketball coach Todd Landrum was hoping his Cardinals could start Round 2 the same way they started Round 1.

They did.

Thanks to an impressive second-half performance.

And the clutch shooting of Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.)

Holland knocked down a game-tying 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds left, and the Cardinals outscored Macalester 11-6 in the extra frame to lead SMU to a 70-65 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory — a sweep of the Scots in the teams' two meetings this season.

The Cardinals struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 23 percent from the field (7-for-30) and were 0-for-8 from behind the 3-point line in falling behind 30-21 at the break.

Over the game's final 20 minutes, however, SMU turned up the heat, outscoring Macalester 38-29 — with Holland's 3-pointer the exclamation point on the Cardinals' comeback.

Holland finished with a game-high 21 points, while Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 17 points and Bradley Bruno (Chicago, Ill.) added his second collegiate double-double, netting 12 points and adding 10 rebounds.

David Lewin led three Scot players in double figures with 19 points. Paul Richie added 16 points and Kyle Hamblett added 14 for Macalester, which remained winless on the season in falling to 0-16 overall.

The Cardinals, who improved to 4-7 in the MIAC and 5-11 overall, are back in action on Saturday, playing host to Bethel in a 3 p.m. conference contest at the SMU Gym. Bethel beat the Cardinals 78-62 in the teams' first meeting on Dec. 6.
