Gustavus went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the game's final minutes, as the Gusties pulled away from the Cardinals en route to a 66-59 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Wednesday in St. Peter, Minn. … Saint John's, meanwhile, has been off since last Saturday, when the Johnnies got a double-double of 13 points and 10 assists from Andy Burns to hold off Carleton 65-63 in Collegeville, Minn.

Last Meeting: The Cardinals matched the Johnnies blow-for-blow over the game's final 20 on Jan. 3, but in the opening 20 minutes, SJU had its way with SMU, building a commanding 10-point halftime advantage and never looking back en route to a 77-67 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory in Collegeville, Minn.

A Year Ago: The Johnnies swept the teams' season series a year ago. SJU boasted four players in double figures and shot 64 percent from the field, as the Johnnies overcome a 7-0 game-opening Cardinal run to beat SMU 80-77 at the SMU Gym on Dec. 1. The Cardinals, who fell behind by 10, 34-24, at the break, could not cut into the Johnnies' lead over the final 20 minutes, as SJU rode a 41-37 scoring edge to seal the 75-61 win in the teams' second meeting on Jan. 26 in Collegeville, Minn.

Cardinal Notes: With Wednesday's 66-59 loss to Gustavus, SMU fell to 3-4 in its last seven games. The Cardinals held the high-scoring Gusties to their fourth-lowest offensive output of the season. … The Cardinals' 70-65 overtime win over Macalester on Jan. 21 completed the Cardinals' season sweep of the Scots, and snapped a two-game losing streak. … The Cardinals' win over the Scots was also their first overtime game since the 2002-03 season, when SMU lost to UST 65-62. SMU's last overtime win came on Dec. 6, 2000, when the Cardinals posted an 80-70 win over St. Olaf. … Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.), who scored a team-leading 20 points in the Cardinals' win vs. Bethel last Saturday — the second straight game in which the SMU sophomore netted 20 or more points — led the team in scoring for a fourth straight time Wednesday, tossing in 19 points vs. Gustauvs. …  Holland has now scored 20 or more points seven times this season and has reached double figures in 23 of the team's last 25 games. … Holland's 20-point effort vs. Bethel last Saturday marked the 15th time in SMU's 18 games in which they boasted at least one 20-point scorer. … Holland's team-leading 13-point effort vs. Augsburg on Jan. 19 was also the fewest by the team's leading scorer all season. … Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 17 points vs. the Gusties Wednesday. It was the third straight 17-point performance for Wright, who has now scored 10 or more points in 37 of the team's last 43 games — including 20 or more points 10 times in the Cardinals' last 16 contests. … Bradley Bruno (Chicago, Ill.) collected his second collegiate double-double vs. Macalester on Jan. 21, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Bruno's other double-double was a career-high 22-points, 10-rebound effort vs. Hamline on Jan. 7. … Bruno is the only Cardinal this season with a double-double. …  That 22-point effort by Bruno vs. Hamline on Jan. 7 was just the second time this season — and just the second time in SMU's last 34 games — that Holland or Wright have not led the team in scoring. …  Wright and Holland enter tonight's game averaging in double figures, with Wright boasting a team-best 20.4 ppg average, while Holland is at 16.6 ppg. Wright is also ranked No. 2 in the MIAC in scoring with his 19.8 ppg average. …  SMU's win at Macalester was its only road win in nine tries this season. … SMU's 59 points vs. Gustavus marked the fourth time this season the Cardinals have been held under 60 points. … SMU held the Gusties to just 66 points Wednesday — the fourth time this season the Cardinals have held their opponent under 70 points.

Johnnie Notes: The Johnnies snapped their two-game losing streak with their two-point win over Carleton last Saturday. … Andy Burns recorded his first collegiate double-double vs. Carleton, scoring 13 points and added a career-best 10 assists. … Burns double-double was the first points-assists double-double for SJU since current assistant coach Pat McKenzie recorded 14 points and 11 assists against St. Olaf on Feb. 5, 2003. … SJU boasted four players scoring in double figures vs. Carleton, while Aaron Burtzel was one point shy of his fifth double-double of the season with nine points and 11 rebounds. … Burtzel is currently second in the MIAC in rebounding (9.6 rpg) and minutes played (34.65 mpg), and fourth in assists (3.65 apg). … Burns is one of six players to have led the team in scoring this season. … The Johnnies have scored a season-high 81 points on three separate occasions. On the flip side, SJU has allowed 80 or more points three times, including a season-high 97 points by UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 15. … With the victory, SJU head coach Jim Smith is now seven wins away from 700 for his career with a 693-484 record in 45 seasons.
