COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — It's been a long time since the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team has beaten Saint John's on the Johnnies' home floor.
A very long time.
Thirty-eight years, to be exact.
Make that 39.
The Cardinals matched the Johnnies blow-for-blow over the game's final 20 minutes Saturday afternoon, but in the opening 20 minutes, SJU had its way with SMU, building a commanding 10-point halftime advantage and never looking back en route to a 77-67 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) poured in a team-leading 26 points — including 16 in the second half. The SMU sophomore, who has now scored 20 or more points 15 times in his collegiate career, knocked down 8 of 12 field goal attempts and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.
Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) chipped in 18 points, as the duo accounted for 44 of the team's 67 points.
Chris Schwartz scored a game-high 30 points to lead four SJU players in double figures. Andrew Latzke came off the bench to chip in 15 points, while Todd Herman added 11 and Andy Burns finished with 10.
The Johnnies, who shot 45 percent from the field (25-for-55) and drained 10 3-pointers, led by as many as 22 points, 59-37, before SMU closed out the final nine minutes on a 30-18 run.
SMU, which falls to 1-4 I the MIAC and 2-8 overall, returns to action Monday, traveling to Carleton for a 7:30 p.m. conference matchup against the Knights.
